Towing with a 64/71/13ss?

How well is this turbo suited for moderate towing(10-15k).My buddy has one on his 00 2500 auto and it is extremely laggy with mach 4's and edge comp.Do the comman rails spool a turbo better and how much does having a staight drive help.I want to upgrade from my htb2 62-12 but don't want to go too big.

hAVING A 6-SPEED will help. I had one for a while and I towed other trucks no problem. I was even able to tow on higher levels of smarty. I think it is a perfect turbo for people that want to play and tow big.

That's good to hear bluechrome; same turbo I'm looking at, and fits my criteria.

Did you have any surging issues with it?I was looking at the 62/71/13ss but floor it diesel seems to think the 64 is the best all around turbo.I dont know if my flux1's are enough to get this thing lit quick.

With heavy towing you will get very little surging at higher boost levels but none with normal driving. Stock fueling will light this turbo very quicklyy. With all the fueling mods you have you will have no prob lighting that turbo. You will be very happy with it!! Although your clutch might not like you to much though

Homewrecker, i'm definitely going with the 64. How do you like your OFE? You think it'll hold the 64 just fine? How much power do you think you're pushing right now?

I have a HTT 62/71/13ss. It is a little laggy but not bad at all. You will not want a tight TC with this turbo for towing. Having mine built a little loose. EGT's will raise up until the boost comes up then it levels out great. My max EGT's were 1250. Very good in my opinion with Quad Std. box. Haven't really heard anybody with that good of a results with EGT decrease with a quad box running. We all know they run hot. No surging issues either. I think I like it.

I've been really impressed with the ofe. I dynoed before the inj. upgrade and made 479hp/929tq on a tri-dog/mp-8.Have since gone to the smarty and flux1's and there is definitely more power. The clutch is holding just fine.Has pulled15k and been to the track for a few runs.Never once has it felt like it was going to slip. Will a 64 push it past its limits? I don't know.Peter with SBC told me the ofe would take 550hp in moderation, meaning drive sensible 80% of the time and let it rip the other 20% and it should hold up well.If I were to upgrade I would probably go with a 3250DD.

You should have no problem getting a 64 lit with you fuel, I wish I had gone bigger than a 66 and I am still on stock sticks.

I think I have enough fuel just don't want it to be too laggy while towing.I know cruising egt's will be higher, just don't want a big delay when I get on it to pass someone pulling a trailer. Turbo questions on these forums will get the biggest variables on what works best.I am looking for the happy medium. Can tow decent and play decent.Have decided against twins and am trying to make this next turbo purchase be the final mod on this truck.

Yeah, I'm tore between the DD3250 and the OFE. Guess Peter is gonna be my deciding factor.

When I bought my ofe you couldn't get a sprung hub DD.Thats why I got what I did.If I were buying new again I would get the 3250DD so there would be no doubt of out growing it.I would call Peter and tell him what you want to do with the truck and let him decide whats best.

Are they very streetable? And how much harder is the shifts & clutch pressure? Seems they are pretty popular, and I don't mind putting down the dough for a little extra reliability.
