Tone Ring Mod help

Well I have been reading about this tone ring mod since I joined not too long ago and I still cannot find a post on how to do it yourself with the stock sensor. Could someone please explain to me who what when where why and how? I have spent the last 2 hours trying to find how in the heck to do it and I figured this will be the best way to find out.

Also if I do this will it affect my soon to be mods to be installed in a few days?

Bully Dog Downloader w/ outlook
4 inch MBRP exhaust
Devils Own Propane injection.

Will post pitures once all of it is done

Bob

The tone ring mod is on the tone ring (behind the crankshaft vib damper). A little more involved but cheaper (free).
The Rokktech sensor is the other way to advance the injection timing.
Easier to install, but it'll cost ya.

Once you have the BDDL installed you shouldn't have any "low end grunt" problems at all.

Well I should hopefully be able to roast em until 3rd gear. Im gonna have the propane installed by Tues of next week! Hopefully this should keep the powerchokes in the rear view from now on.

Thanks for the tone rod link u guys. Any guesses on what I can dyno after all this is completed?

Tone Ring Mod Instructions...

1. Remove fan belt (3/4 in. breaker bar)
2. Remove 4 bolts holding the Harmonic Balancer Pulley (15mm Socket, 1/2 drive, short extension)
3. Remove harmonic Balancer Pulley and tone ring (basically falls off in your hand after removing the 4 bolts)
4. Mill the alignment dowel pin hole on the left side (dremmel and small drill)
5. re-assemble but, turn tone ring clockwise from the front before torquing the 4 15mm bolts.

Comments, the whole idea is to mill the alignment hole of the tone ring to allow you to rotate the tone ring clockwise from the front. The 4 bolts holding the harmonic balance will keep you from rotating the tone ring too far.

I was very leary about doing this on my virgin truck with only 1500 miles on it but, it took only 45 minutes and it's easy to put back together if something went wrong.

The hardest part of the job was getting the fan belt off and back on again. At least it was good practice if I ever needed to do it in an emergency.

Does this mod do any good if you have a timing box? If this mod is done and then a timing box is added, is it necessary to move the tone ring back to stock? TIA! Craig

Seems to me that if a particular box optimizes the timing you'd end up with too much advance because there's extra advance in the ring mod that the box can't see. I think that would be a call for the box mfgr. to make... just be sure to tell them when purchasing a box. I'm going to do it anyway and move the ring back (if necessary) when I add a box. Craig

I'm getting a box education. Edge told me the EZ is pressure only - so I guess the ring mod would go good with that box. They also said the Juice doesn't begin timing control til higher settings. It all sounds like a can of worms... but interesting! Craig

I have the Smarty and when I set it on SW 3 it was way too much timing because the truck sounded like a 1st gen truck with way too much rattle and pinging. I was just concern of the long term damage to the engine. I switch to SW 2 which quieted the truck.

Will this mod advance the timing as much as the Smarty that causes excessive pinging and rattling? Is it adjustable?

I had to file the 4 bolt holes as well because only the dowel pin didn't do anything much. Moved the ring about 5/8 of the way to next notch, which i think is about 4 deg of timming. One complete notch to the next notch being 6 degrees adv. Did i go to far ? Sounds OK. 1 mpg improvement.
