straight pipe observations

last week i piped the old mans 04.5 with a delete pipe from genos, sounds good, deep, and not too obnoxiously loud even when getting on the go pedal.

tonight i ripped into my best friends 05 with a muffler delete pipe, and gutted the cat. man what a difference that cat makes WOW. its alot louder, and more aggressive. i love it. now he also has an AFE stage 2 which may contribute some to the sound. all i can say is i love the sound of them.

niether of them can hold a candle to my 2nd gen 24v with noise tho, the 2nd gens are just so much louder in the engine that the exhaust is CRAZY, and with my stacks, niether of these 3rd gens come close

Left the cat on my 05 till I get some sound deadener in the truck, but doesnt even come close to my '97 with the 5" stacks, best exhaust IMO....
But 3rd gens dont sound too shabby straight piped either, too many people are afraid that it will be too loud

I'll tell ya, I was affraid mine would be too loud too, but did it anyway of course. I'm overwhelminly surprised. At highway speeds with cruise set, my 5" exhaust and 5" stack isn't any more loud than my stock was straight piped. Now, when you hit a hill, it chimes in like a Pete, but not annoying at all. I actually still smile everytime I hit the pedal and this is the second day I have drove it to work!

There are days were I shut the radio off after a long hectic day and just enjoy the calming sounds of the straight piped exhaust and the turbo whistle.

You aint kiddin'!! I am about to wear out my rear passenger side window motor- Every stop sign/light, I crack it a few inches to hear that sweet sound of a straight pipe and turbo- out the tail pipe. But anyone notice that it seems to queit down after a few hundred, or am I just getting used to it? Yes, at highway speeds under no load, no louder than stock.

Dualing it out

I had my truck staight piped with 4 inch but only form the cab; not the entire exaust. It sound good but I wanted all 4 inch. So I went to the muffler shop and they replaced the down pipe coming from my turbo with one from a newer Dodge that had the 4 inch. My previous down pipe was, I think, 3.5". Now I have all 4" exaust with no cat or muffler, but it is dualed out at the back with 2-5" tips 24" long both at 45 degrees. I know this is popular with gasoline trucks but I figured I'd try something different.

I did, however, notice that the sound was deeper and quieter.

I think 12valves sound the best straigt piped. My 03 sounds good but nothing close to a 12v or a 24v. Adios

the 12's and 24's sound so good...the 24's just have so much rattle to them, even more so than the 12's

but the best sound is any cummins 12 or 24 with a p-pump turning close to 6k with a jet engine turbo spooled...now thats enough to make any cummin fan weak in the knees
