Pmcr r49 ???
Pmcr r49 ???
I've been thinking about a PMCR for a long time. I'm looking for quality power, not just quantity. I've talked to Mark a couple of times and I'd like to get input from some users. The main thing I don't like about my Predator is the touchy throttle on any tune higher than 100 hp. My driving is mostly city and it's hard to avoid smoke and the overall hyper sensitivity of the throttle sucks for everything except WOT. Mark didn't think the PMCR affected the throttle response. So, how do you actual users like your PMCRs? I've read about them on the TST site but I can't tell if it does boost fooling or if I can read pressure without any other optional sensor or parts. It looks like I can choose how much timing and pressure. My truck was built in 10/02. Is there anything the PMCR will do on the later trucks that it won't do on my early 03? Any info is greatly appreciated, TIA! Craig

Yes, I like mine. I would not say the throttle is touchy at all unless its the power level is cranked way way up and I'm at cruising speed. But thats easily adjusted and I'm rarely ever at high power levels. I can't comment on boost fooling but I don't think it has that. Timing and pressure is adjustable and I've toyed around with it at times to see if it affected mileage while towing and soforth. As far as later trucks compared to your 03 I can't comment either.
I will say this. When I bought it in 05 it was one of the first chips with as many Nanny's on it that there were. I liked that being a new first time diesel owner. 6.5 years later I've only had one problem with it and I sent it back for a reprogram with no issues from TST. They stood by their product and I would deal with them again and as a matter of fact they were quite friendly about it. Often, there are companies that once they have your cash you're trash. But they were not that way. There are other chips like the smarty which seem to offer more power and other options but I don't regret buying the TST still to this day. It's reliable safe power when I need it and it throws plenty of fuel to the Ram when I want to play. You will find though, that once you start down this road you can't stop. I bought the TST, then the EGTs got hot. So I bought exhaust.... then I bought an air intake, then I bought the trans... and so on.... and so on..... You get the picture.... Now I've got twin turbos and all is well but it's many thousands later. It'll cost you way more than you think!

I have the original model not the r49 so not sure what is the difference. I love mine. They installed a boost fooler when installed in 03. Throttle responce is not effected at any of the settings I have ever used but I have never gone past 4 power and 3 torque. It does not do fuel pressure it does fuel duration. Increased duration does not kick in until 12 pounds of boost. That is why I upgraded to F1 40HP injectors which is there from the start and really helped with towing on my 250HP SO.
Thanks guys! I think the r49 has all the bells and whistles, turbo cool down etc.. The description says it has adjustable timing and pressure but maybe it only work on later models. I have all the other mods I want, I just want better driveability than the Predator. I just need to keep the power down low enough for my stock clutch. I've run every hot tune in the Predator and it has held - I don't mash the throttle til the rpm is up good. Mark is top notch! I've bought things from him since 97. Craig
I have one of the old original R37's. Put it in about 250,000 miles ago and it is still going strong. Not all the bells and whistles, just adjustable torque and horsepower. It has been terrific and I never turn it up above 5/5. It is pretty impressive for everyday driving at that level. Usually run about 4/2. Great driveability and reliability. I have rarely set a PO336 code but I am also running a modded crank position sensor. My original injectors went to 220K and I replaced with Don M's F2's and a 2 micron filter setup. 285,000 and truck starts, runs like new and pulls my 7500 lb travel trailer like it is hardly there.
I have run the r49 for several years now. It has all the bells and whistles too. At this point in its life for me, it is an expensive gauge and not much else. With ball bearinged/water cooled turbos, I don't need the cool down timer. I can't really use the rail pressure adjust as it does not like modded cp3's and will surge bad. Let's not even talk about dual cp3's.
I set the p0336 code constantly. At every start up. I don't need the timing adjust since I have the smarty.
It is nice for on the fly adjustibility, but the smarty is so much better in power delivery, I use the smarty and forget the TST.
The TST delivers power much like the old Edge does... hot and smoky. I have had the dyno time to play with the TST and compare to smarty. The smarty gives more power, smoother power throughout the range, at lower egts and smoke. The best I can get with TST alone is over 100hp less than smarty alone. And believe me I can support any fueling required past 1400hp on #2.
I only use the TST these days as a stack over smarty at 2/0 and nothing more. Even then it is only at the track or dyno.
The TST remains viable and is definitely a high quality product and is backed by fine people in the business IMHO. I wouldn't want you to think I am bashing the product. I simply think there is better to be had now for the discerning buyer. Especially from what little I've seen from EFI live.

I talked to Mark some more and the PMCR does boost fooling, timing & pressure on my 03. I'm looking more for driveability (no more extremely touchy throttle on hi hp tunes) than max power. Mark said he's had some customers with damaged ecms with smartys so I'm leary of them. We talked about one of my Predator issues ... the sudden timing clatter right when I let off the throttle, on any tunes over 100 hp and he said that's cummins not Predator. The PMCR does it too. My 2 biggest reasons to ditch the predator is the throttle and the timing clatter and now it looks like the timing clatter won't go away, no matter what. Now I'm hesitant to spend $800 just for the throttle issue plus it can't be any fun getting to the crank and cam sensors to connect the PMCR. Maybe I better look into the smarty a little more. Craig
