NV5600 short shift kit?
NV5600 short shift kit?
Went to the track for the first time this weekend, and im lookin into short shift kit for my 5600. Also a weighted shift ****. Who makes a good kit, and if your runnin it, how do you like it?
I have a NV5600 with the BD short shift kit.
I think BD is the only company that makes a short shift kit for this tranny.
I've had it for over 3 years and I really like it but I had to make other changes also.
The BD short shift kit moves the shift pattern to the right, away from the driver. This was not comfortable for me.
I ended up purchasing a Whiplash shift stick from these guys in Washington state. It was around US$100.

The new bent stick moves the pattern over to the left by about 5 inches and the rubber isolator in the bottom of the stick is welded up.
The stock shifter is hollow and would not be easy to bend without kinking.
The shifting is great now with the Whiplash handle & the BD short shift tower. Comfortable, smooth and short shifts.
Removing the rubber isolator in the shift handle is what really made the difference though.
I would start with the new stick 1st and go from there. Also don't purchase the new handle from Pro-Finish with their chrome "paint" finish.
It peels off from the high wear areas. Just paint it black or have it chrome plated.

The part that screws into the shift tower is mounted inside the shift stick and isolated by rubber. This is where most of the vague shifting comes from. The Pro-finish stick has this welded up. If I had to do it again, I would weld up the stock stick before buying the BD short shift kit. This will tighten up the shifter also.
The Hurst shift handle is not a simple bolt on. An adapter is required. Tomeygun did engineer & sells a kit to do this..

I don't see this kit listed on Geno' garage any more but the instructions are still there.

BD short shift
I'm running the DB short shift kit and really am a little disappointed with it. Someone mentioned that this kit moves the pattern to the right some which true and in stop and go traffic getting to the starting gear is a little tough at times. Better modifications to spend money on.

IMO it didn't move anything right or left for me but rather up. The shifts are shorter but like I said it didn't seem to speed anything up, mainly because with that short shifting is also notchier shifting and getting into gears are a little more tricky, the other thing is the movement of the shifter from right to left is stiffer, reverse takes a little more effort to get past the lockout. I guess I'm used to it now, so I won't be removing it.
