Modified camshaft sensor?
dont mean to ask silly questions that have already been covered, but,i want to get this straight......pull belt, wheel, take off what>40thou.,1 mill?put back on,turn wheel clockwise till slack out on boltholes and tighten balancer....what was you alls final number,as in 1 mil is 2 degrees?i understand it depends on where you were to begin with on adjustment from factory.....so if you wanted to go say 3 degrees,go say,60thou.?......thanks for any help guys...............bama
If you file approx. a 1/16th of an inch from the counter-clockwise side of the dowel pin of the tone ring, this will allow you to move the ring clockwise until the play in the bolt holes is taken up. On mine, I would estimate this was closer to three degrees total. Made a significant difference in idle smoothness and low end power.
i did the tone ring this morning.it appeared that mine was set in the middle from the best i could tell.i moved it clockwise about 1.5 mm,just a little under 2 anyways....mine seems to start the same, the only difference i can tell is that when letting out the clutch with no fuel pedal applied,it doesnt get the bog-rattling valve sound that it used to.i really cant see any difference in performance at all besides this.....i put on a xzt tow box last week that perked the truck up really good.so when i get some mileage figures,i wont really know which did what there.ill probably put the bypass in and run without the box once i get some readings like it is......mine is 05 4x4 qcab 6 speed on 35`s, h2 wheels, quad tow box, tone ring mod....all else stock.......thanks for the help with it..............................bama
I lost mileage with the sensor!!!!!I believe I installed it correctly, any suggestions on what to look for? There is a gap between the sensor mount and the mounting plate. I can't get it any closer than 1/16 the of an inch!!!!
Ok, I'm confused, this would be the tone wheel, yes? Now, looking at the pic of the Dowel hole, that's what the little hole is? Ok, what shape was this thing before it was milled? looking at the pic, the top side of the hole would be the clock-wise side the the hole? I'm supposed to file the counter clock wise side of the hole, which would be the rounder part of this hole. In other words the bottom side in the pic. This is where you want the extra little gap to be when you turn the tone wheel clock wise and the dowel pin? will want to rest on the freshly milled part? I'm SORRY for all the DUMB questions, I would really like to try this. If you look at my sig, I could use any timing advance I can get with my VA. Thanks in advance for any help.
yes, thats it. on mine rather than trying to file the hole and oblong it, i just ran a drill thru it.. ill have to double check what size i drilled it to... it did not fully round out the hole... still strait across on the top and bottom.
ive got a good steep hill by mi house, great for testing things... climbs about 1kft in about a mile. (guestimates, not mesured.. )
i returned to stock started at 40mph in 6th (about 1200rpm) by the top i picked up 5 mph...
pulled over moved it full advance(3 min job, even hot)
re ran the hill picked up 15 mph even w/ cutting the run short due to slow traffic...

It may be easier to think of it this way. Position the tone ring with the dowel hole at the top (12 o'clock). Take a marker and color the LEFT edge (when facing forwards as installed) of the hole back about a 1/16th of an inch and then file that mark away. Just takes a minute with a chain saw file. Thats all you need to do. Then replace the ring and damper, hand tighten the bolts. Turn the ring towards the drivers side as your facing the front of the engine until it is stopped by the bolts. Hold it there and snug up a bolt to hold it in position while you torque the bolts down. It is now in the fully advanced position. Hope this helps.
can I do the senser mod and still run a tst box on my 04 600 ? also has anyone tried piers cam shaft they said that would boost my milage 3 mile to the gal and I need somethin I only get like 450 miles to a tank of fuel my truck is still all stock tho but my 01 got like 700 miles to a tank but it was modded does a air and exaust system gain any milage in these new trucks?
Completed my file job last night while I had supper cooking, did a quick test drive afterwards with no problems. Next week I have a round trip to Las Vegas so I should be able to get a good milage reading. I need to change my location I live in Mountain home ID now.
I wouldn't think this mod should be a problem with any of the boxes. Theres a fair amount of play in the ring positioning, perhaps a couple of degrees, and I'm sure many trucks have had the ring installed fully advanced or retarded upon assembly. This might also account for some trucks running better than others stock. I know mine couldn't spin the tires, even with my box on 130, until after I did this mod.
fellas,,i have a question on all this.......the tone wheel is bolted to the crank end,so,all 360 degrees of it is used, regardless of number of teeth.im not sure how the computer uses the teeth,i would guess its all figured in with the number and gap.but all 360 degrees would be accounted for, wouldnt you think?...point being,if it is all used, and the circumference is 660mm.then each 1.833mm section would be a degree.that would mean that .070 would be 1 degree....the 1/16th inch most are using is .062,which wouldnt even be 1 degree then.if all is used and the locator gap and gaps between teeth are figured in to total 360 degrees, you would have to move .140 to make the 2 degree advance..........i understand the sensor is reading the teeth come by it for reference to where pistons are at,but is anybody really sure about the gap at the end?is it not to be accounted for in the 360degrees,or not?........just thinking if we were all looking at this wrong,we wouldnt really be advancing hardly any,,no way to know how the program is set up and exactly how it does is there?............bama
Bama, a 16th of an inch at the dowel pin hole will equal out to alot more at the edge of the tone wheel. Exactly how much I cant tell ya as I havent done this mod yet. Its in the near future though.
What are you guys with more than 2 degrees from the tone wheel noticing? I am thinking of going more than 2 degrees when I get time to do the mod.
