gatf4,
Good report on the 6 degrees mod.

Here's some good info on timing. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/timing.htm

Hmmm. How about Redneck Timing Mod (RTM) or Do It Yourself Timing Mod (DIYTM).

Interesting article MikeyB about timing even if it doesn't directly apply to our year of engines. It seems the concensus is to have the timing set in the 14-15 degrees BTC range.

Does anyone know of the stock static timing setting for our 3rd gen HPCR Cummins?

FYI - I've had my tone wheel mod set at a 4 degrees advance for about a month now, and I think it's all good......

Did you have to grind into the bolt holes also in order to hit four degrees??

My wife thinks I'm just like Tim Taylor (Allen) on home improvement . If a little is good than a lot must be way better I vote for the RTM.

The increase in fuel economy is for real. I filled up today and checked the mileage. The economy for around town driving is right at 20mpg. Twice in a row now!

How far did you change the timing?

I'm seeing excellent fuel economy too. I can't give a before/after comparison because my engine only has a little over 3,000 miles on it, over half towing our 5er.

I'm seeing 13+ MPG pulling the 5er in my gallery. Combination weight is 16,500.

I'm seeing 20 MPG city driving if I'm gentle with it.

Pinch me, I think I'm dreaming.

I've advanced my timing until it pings at idle when the auto is in gear.
One of the things that I am noticing is it stumbles when idling cold, and lots more smoke until you really heat it up. The reason has to be the catalytic converter. Anyone else notice this?

I'm using the Rokktech crankshaft sensor which is only 2 degrees.

How far did you move the tone wheel? Sounds like you went a little too far on the timing.

I installed my Rokktech offset sensor last night and noticed the following this AM in my commute to work:

- Cold performance was pretty much the same (52 degrees this am)
- Once warm, the SOP throttle response is much improved
- The boost at full throttle (in 1st and 2nd on 48RE) seems to fluctuate a lot more. Previously it would peak at 32 psi then drop to 25-26 psi and return to 28 or so and lock in. Now it peaks about the same but swings back and forth a few times before settling in.
- I forgot about the mod a few times and was pleasantly suprised when accelerating from a stop.
- Engine noise is about the same but at 28,000 miles, I have the cam gear noise which would mask most noticable noise changes at idle. At cruising speed I could not notice any difference.

Disclaimer: I mostly tow with this truck and drive it minimally on my commute. Although I did commute in it earlier in the week, I may no be as "in tune" to unloaded performance changes as others are. I plan on towing soon and will update my oservations when I return.
Next step: Loosen the tone wheel and move it to the most advanced side of the "slop".
