Blown32,
That is great news!!!!How long did the modification take you?I might just have to break down and figure out how to do it.
Thanks for the data

What RPMs do you spin at 75mph? With 3.73's and 315's it has to be close to 2000rpm, correct? If I go any over 2000rpm fuel economy drastically drops. It will go from 21mpg @ 2000 rpm (that's 60mph for me) to never better than 16mpg at 75mph.

I wonder if my 03 would benefit from this timing mod with its little tires, 4.10's, and a 6-speed? Hmmm....

Im happy to get 645 KMS/ tank, about 14mpg,

Even though its 12000#, I still figure it should be better, by watching the boost/pyro it doesn't seem like its working, sucking back the fuel, until its over 2000rpm.

It is great to see this mod working. I haven't put enough miles on my truck to tell yet and my miles are pretty mixed. However the fuel gauge moves a lot slower with my Cummins than it did with my PSD.

Ummm.... it is great people are getting gains with the sensor mod. However, before everyone runs out and buys one, I think someone should verify exactly how much advance it is yielding. To me, removing 80 thou from the sensor is not giving 2 degrees of advance.

I suspect the 600s and 610s would benefit from more advance than the 555 and I think the sensor mod is only advancing a bit over 1 degree. I think the 6x0s should have 2+ degrees. I also think modding the tone wheel is better than modding that sensor. Just my 0.02. If one has enough patience and a caliper one can mod the tone wheel with a file for free to boot.

odie2219,

It's a 5 to 10 min bolt on (after you buy the sensor, send it to be modified, and get it back).

realsquash,

About 2050 rpm at 75 mph with the 3.73s, 6sp, and 315s. I have tried to drive slower but just can't do it.

Superduty,

I would like to know just how much timing the sensor adds as I am thinking of giving the tone wheel mod a try. Or at least moving it to take up the slop in the factory mounting (to the most advanced position). I don't want to go to far so knowing the true advance of the sensor would sure help.

I don't have one to measure up. People say that 80 thou is removed from the advancing side of the sensor. I can't see how that yields much more than 1 degree. I'll CAD it up in my spare time if someone gives me all the sensor dimensions.

My 600 loves its advance. (2.22 degrees) I think it is going to improve the longevity of the injectors because it idles better.

Superduty,
Once the sensor is shaved it's no longer centered to the tone wheel. It's almost sitting off to the side of the wheel.

So how does that advance the timing 2 degrees. I just don't get it. The sensor sits in the sensor holder. Someone shaves 80 thou from the side of it. How can the sensor advance more than 80 thou ? And then, like you say, the center of the sensor face actually moves in an arc and moves away from the tone wheel teeth. That will retard the sensing versus if the teeth were in the center of the sensor. The sensor will give the earliest tooth detection when the tooth goes right over the center of the sensor.

I think advancing the timing is great. I just don't think they've done it the way it should be done.

I don't understand why Rockteck isn't machining the tone wheels rather than the sensor. It would take the same amount of time and they'd get a true 2 degrees of advance and the sensor would stay on the center of the teeth. It only takes a few minute to pull the tone wheel off these engines.

I'll shut up about it now.

I've very happy with how I did mine. We went on a 2 hour trip today and the engine purrrrred. I think it got really good fuel economy, given that we climbed 1500 feet on a 7 mile gravel and sometimes less logging road. Next weekend I pull our 5th wheel, but only 150 miles. I love the way it idles now. My injectors were beginning to foul. Now they seem to be cleaning up.

Oh yeah... I did my 3rd fill up since installing the Cummins in my Superduty. 19.6 MPG for 10% pulling a 9000 lb 5th wheel, 45% city, 45% 65 MPH highway and an hour of idling. Pretty decent. Engine has about 1200 miles on it now.

Superduty,
That measurement was a rough estimate. I eyeballed it with calipers. Paul at Rokktech corrected me and it is more that 0.080". For a more accurate number I should mounted it on a fixture and ran a dial indicator around it.
The sensor it a lot easier to swap than the tone wheel. Less than a 5 minute R&R.

superduty,
Thanks for the photos. How long did the tone wheel take to modify from takeoff to reinstall? Did you pull the radiator?

I did it on my lunch hour ! Pulled it, machined it and put it back on.

I didn't pull my radiator. I'm working on my Ford SD, which doesn't have a fan shroud so it was very easy to get to. The damper bolts take a 15mm socket. To tighten them, torque them all the 30 ftlbs and then give them all 60 more degrees of turn.

I have a 555 engine and the Quad Regular Box. Is this something I should consider? The Quad box does advance the timing already, correct? Can anyone tell me how much the timing is advanced with the Quad box?

Berak,
Can't really say. I hear the Quad box does some timing but not how much. Guess you can experiment by going +2 degrees and see how the engine performs. Can always go back to the stock position. Do you have gauges?

I have no gauges yet so I couldn't tell much except for mileage.

you don't need to pull the rad or fan on a 03-04 trucks to get the damper off... i have never worked a 04.5-05 with the engine mounted fan shroud so i don't know if it will be in the way or not..
