I have had a Mag Hytec AA rear diff cover for some time now. I just tried to take the drain bolt out and i stripped the allen key on the drain plug. Anyone else have issues with this poorly engineered piece ? I mean come on a small allen key on a big drain bolt (torqued to 30 in/lbs) ????????

I had nothing but issues with the front cover and now the rear is giving me grief. I must of had to take these covers off more times than i have used the drain plugs and fill plugs. Talk about a waste of money ! PML is a much better cover !

 

yes, on my mag transmission pan. I had to order a new plug. $25 and it is a larger allen slot. I don't remember the new size but they did provide the allen wrench. I guess they realized their design flaw but are not willing to admit it.

 

ah, we switched over to a larger allen size for cost reduction purposes. The old design worked fine...

 

Theres a trick to removing those, I learned the hard way the first time, even with tons of antisieze prior!

Tap Tap with a Hammer on the bottom of the plug. The metal to metal will stick together. Search the forums, its helped alot of others.

 

Going to try this on Saturday when I change the rear gear oil.

 

Wish I knew that we had to hammer the plug before removing it. I don't remember that on the installation instructions and torque setting. I would have much rather used that $25 for beer, but on the bright side, I can now use my drain plug as designed.

 

I have always used a layer or two of Teflon tape rather than anti-seize on drain plugs, some bolts, and some fittings and have never had a problem removing them. It also helps prevent capillary seepage.

4 trucks (4 covers), 8 years, and no issues with the drain plugs stripping allen wrenches on mag-hytec covers. And, no leaks!

Not sure what is going on here....
