Mag-Hytec differential covers
Mag-Hytec differential covers
Thinking hard about replacing the rear differential cover on my truck when I do a rearend fluid change. My question is this: Is there a replacement for the front cover?
No big deal if there isn't, I was just wondering. Anyone having any problems? I read somewhere that the covers are missing a hole that causes a slight leak. Did I read wrong? Also, who stocks these things? Haven't done any hard searching yet? Any vendors in particular you know that has them?

And they're right down the street. Perhaps I should give them a call. It's also time for me to do my first fuel filter change, and I can just stock up.

Here is the post that I saw where someone was having a leak problem. Anyone else experiencing this?

Re:Mag-Hytec differential covers
I have Mag-Hytec covers on the front and rear. Good stuff! I would highly recommend them to anyone! Plus, the staff over at Mag-Hytec is great! Spoke to them a couple times via email and phone.. great service!

Re:Mag-Hytec differential covers
I remember reading somewhere that the AAM axles may have a stamped number, or something like that where the cover seals. I believe all it took to fix was to file the stamping down to level with the housing.
Re:Mag-Hytec differential covers
No problems either except a note of caution. I don't know about the American's, but the Dana's have a serial number stamped on the mating face of housing. I took a little sandpaper and smoothed any burrs, then filled the numbers with a little blue RTV. Because of the drain in the Mag cover, you can RTV the entire cover if you want for extra security. Now the cautionary note. If your front cover is vented, you're going to need a vented dipstick. Geno's must know this when you order so they can send you the right vented dipstick and cover. They are a matched pair because the vent in the stick must be oriented a certain way when tightened into the cover. I didn't know this and ended up sending the entire cover back to Mag for modification.

Has anyone put one of these on the front diff of the 2nd Gen's. It looks to me like it wouldnt clear the RH connecting tie rod. Anyone got any experience with this? Also, I asked this question once before but what are the real advantages of the MAG covers for Diff's. I understand the concept for transmission as more fluid allows for better cooling and flow and so forth but on a diff the oil is only carried by the gears themselves so is there really an advantage? The covers are a bit expensive at about $230 a pop.

I had one on mine. First to answer your question. The advantages are it holds more fluid, it cools better than the steel cover, it's easy to drain and check, and most of all they look very
. The tie rod must be removed from the spindle during installation, and swung out of the way. It's an easy procedure which can be accomplished with a mallet, and the removal of the driver's side tire. My front cover was on briefly before I had to remove it (see explaination above).

I have one on the front (butt & belly also) - works great. I bgt 1 @ 6 months till I had all 3 - so it didn't hurt too bad. There is a groove in it for the tie rod. The Mag Hy-Tec does not allow use of the DT Trackbar.
However, there is a new trackbar coming (within 3 weeks) from Darrin in Canada, inventor of the DSS - Darin's Steering Stabilizer.
There is a picture on their web site of it WITH a DANA 60 Mag Hy-Tec cover. http://www.solidsteel.ca/
I love my Mag Hy-Tec's for ease of changing fluid and for the Magnets. Amazing to me how much dust and particulate those magnets capture! Also no doubt in my mind they run cooler. Front cover is stronger and sloped for off road impacts...if that's important to you.
Not cheap but... work great and, as someone said before....really look cool!
