Question Mag-Hytec Differential Cover

How much lub did anyone put into their new cover? Mine only took about 5 quarts to put it at the same level of OEM cover. I compared the two covers before installing and it appeared that the level with the OEM cover came to approximately the same level as the "Oil Level refernece plug" in the Mag-Hytec. My concern is that on the dip stick it showed as being about half way between the bottom of the dip stick and the first line up from the bottom. The instructions state that the level should e about half way between the two marks. Help!

Mag-Hytec normally recommends that the level be between the bottom of the axle shaft and the bottom of the axle tube I.D. - but I wonder if that was developed using semi-floaters where this would improve oiling of the axle bearings... could be a seal weep issue.

On my 9.25 semi-floater on my Dakota, this level was higher than the factory fill hole. I called and the Mag-Hytec people talked about bearing oiling on the 9.25, but also talked about the deeper cover changing the way the oil is stirred by the rotating ring gear/diff case - it has more room to "climb" the cover wall with the deeper cover, so a higher level is used to immerse the diff to approximately stock levels when running. This might be the approach which has them specifying a higher fill level on the full floaters.

I'd call Mag-Hytec to confirm, but I think that's what is going on.

Thanks Jim. I'll give Mag-Tec a call tomorrow.
