Guys, I got a mint k31 off ebay for hmmmm about 350 and then I got the non wastegated hybrid housing off Ind. Inj. plus a custom ATS manifold with the correct flange. The stock k31 is 1.28 wastegated but they have a K31 with a 1.4# and bigger wheels. II has 3 or 5 k31 turbine housings a 0.80A/R with a flange that fits our manifolds...I got the 0.9# with the larger flange and then you can get a 1.0#A/R with a larger flange the same as a s400. The Compressor wheel is Forged and Cnc'd Aluminum Alloy. Looks stronger and nicer than any other set of fins. When I worked on GE jet turbines the compressor fins were cast and machined Titanium alloy. The surface finish was a matt texture. The k31 is a great turbo but it is fussy with a heavily fueled auto truck. With a standard it is wicked for its size. Greg Hogue's Dr. Performance truck uses a 0.80A/R k31 with a custom modified turbine housing on his 1150hp drag truck on nitrous. ks

Is the turbine housing modded to be smaller than anything available for the K31 turbocharger?

For reference, here's a loaner pic off the Bank's site. Garrett's special turbo, just for Bank's diesel truck. Please make a note of really small turbinehousing, when comparing to rest of the frame. Looks like it would drive backpressures off the chart. I guess it doesn't. It does however have rather generously sized turbine wheel.

Here's more on the chargers: http://www.bankspower.com/DmaxTypeR-Eng4.cfm

I called htt turbo about the k31 I have and he looked it up and found over 200 variasions of the k31. The one I have has a 66mm air wheel and a 20.6 exhaust housing on it. I have tried to find out how big and how small you can get them but no one wants to look them up.I haven't used the one I got, I wonder how it would spool as a single?

What is your reasoning behind the above statement? Would the A5K be bad for towing or would you just not be able to keep your foot out of it?

How does the A5K spool compared to the stock turbo down low?

Dudh, disregard. I decided to look at the ATS website. All questions answered..

It does not spool very good at low RPMs...it tows fine if you don't mind keeping the RPM's up and hauling butt. I tow with mine all the time...but the turbo is not for the faint of heart. It takes some skill to drive around a few of it quirks...hence the "competition only" tag.

Ditto, I have contacted cquestad about that particular turbo and my aplication and decided it would not be the right one for me, at least not right now. BTW thanks agian for the help.

I assume you could tow with just about any turbo out there but I think with the way I drive and haul that the cost/benefit would not pan out for me with an A5k.

If I only towed a little I would get one but I tow too much and I dont want to have to drive around the turbo. Abviously it is worth it to some just not me.

My buddy (bluedually) built his own compound twin turbo set up since he's a welder and what not and used a k31 as a primary and im not sure what the other turbo is in his setup but he loves it. He hauled 19 hay bales on this truck this fall and he figured with the weight of his welding deck, trailer and the bales to be 30k+ and at 90km/h at about 2300 rpm in 5th gear his boost was around 55psi and his egts were only 1100 degrees. Thats pretty darn good. The k31 makes for a very nice towing turbo in a twin setup. The k31 was used on detroit engines i believe but im not all that sure.

I would say you would need some pretty good sized injectors 200hp+ to spool it good. A few years ago a 2nd gen vp truck with an A5k done very well at the pulls around here he was around 620rwhp with that setup at the time
