I'm thinking about getting a Tonneau cover.

After tons of research, I bought the Undercover tonneau and LOVE IT!

Best combination of features out there, all for $650 (local dealer). It's a solid cover (no rattles) and is lightweight enough that one person can install or remove it. Takes about 60 seconds to install or remove. Strong enough that you can stand on it (they advertise it with a football team standing on it). Excellent locks, and locks your tailgate too. Also has an under-the-cover LED-based (read: rugged) light that illuminates the bed.

I installed it myself in under an hour. No drilling of any kind. It looks so good on my short bed that you'd swear Dodge made it themselves straight from the factory.

My highest recommendation.

The only problem I think I would have with a hard tonneau is... what if you get somewhere that you found something you wanted to buy and take home (oversized obviously). What do you do with the cover while you are driving home. I realize it is not a common problem, but I have had situations where you help someone out in a pinch.

I worried about that, too, but the answer is easy. I carry kayaking straps (very strong webbing with camlock buckles) to secure cargo. If I'm in the situation you describe, I simply remove the cover and set it standing up in the bed next to the cargo I need to haul. Run a couple of extra straps over it and voila - no height problem at all.

So far, though, I've found that just lifting up the cover is enough. Once the cargo is loaded, I use bungee cords on each side to hold the cover down against the cargo.

So, if you know you're going to need the height before you leave home, simply remove the cover and leave it at home. If you discover you need it while away from home, carry the cover with you as described. This is another reason the lightweight Undercover is so nice... I can remove it and shuffle it around all by myself if necessary.
