I am shooting for 600 and im at stock, I have a long road ahead.
I bought my 04 last year and haven't had much time/money to wrench on it, been gone alot. I try to stay in the loop and read diesel world/diesel power religiously. I read about a guy who had an engine with a single turbo and put down 600hp, that's what I wanted 600 hp on a single turbo. I just got into the world of Diesel Performance and right now I am looking to upgrade my exhaust and intake then move on to a tuner, most likely looking at a smarty. I am living in CA right now and was wondering if anyone would have some insight on to some short term goals/mods/tips/hints/tricks to get me one step closer to my goal of achieving 600hp. any help would be appreciated.
i would start with a programmer and a lift pump it will also require some kinda of a modded cp3 a good stage3 a set 125hp injectors and a 66mm turbo should put you close to the 600hp mark and set heads studs would be a great idea for some insurance. and a 3250-3600# dual disk clutch

Gauges
DD clutch
Smarty
90-120hp injectors
stage 3 CP3
64 sized turbo (Either HTT's SS, E.D's, or II's bullet)
and your there
To had a little safety Id get some studs and valve springs.

Intake and Exhaust can go on at any time. Make sure that the intake you buy is compatable with the turbo you want to get.

The correct order - IMO - would be:
Gauges
Lift pump
Clutch
Smarty
At this point you have a nice 500hp set up. Then...
Turbo & intake
CP3
Now you're in the 550-600hp range. Then...
Injectors
And depending on the injectors, your 600hp+
Farmboy's response is right on. You don't need studs and springs. You can also get close with stock injectors, but any injectors at all - 50hp and up, will get you the 600hp. You also don't need any larger turbo than mentioned above. Even the 64/65/13ss will support 600hp and will spool a little faster.

Are you still running the stock turbo? I have personal experience with a 64 from HTT and a similar set up to what I said. He isn't going to see 60psi and doubtful that he'd see 55 either. He is going to be upper 40s and low 50s and studs are not needed at that point and neither are springs. I don't even have springs in my truck!
