Question How hot is too hot?

What is the "redline" for EGT's?

Like many others, I've bombed the truck and found I can send the temps through the roof when towing up hill. It's easy to control the temp by backing off, but where is it safe to hold the heat? When the truck was stock it would only hit about 1150° up a grade with WOT.

Thanks

1300 degrees "steady" (i.e. all day long) and it will be fine.

So bouncing off 1400 is no biggie? And holding steady at 1200 is OK?

That's right PADDZ. 1200 all day every day is not hard on the motor at all. It can take spikes over 1300, but the more you go over the less time you can spend over the limit.

My pryo is post turbo.
I did not want to put it there, but it was much easier for me to put it there with the time I had to mount it. The elboe right after the turbo comes off very easy so I drilled and taped that.
I understand that I should subtract about 300 degrees from the numbers that you are getting, is that correct?
On a recent trip towing my 10000 lbs. travel trailer I saw temps over 900 on the hills on I-20 in SC. and GA. It went over 1000 once, but it got close several times.
I am getting a Nelson 86131M 51 in. muffler today. I hope that helps some then I will think about an air intake system. I am going to go slow on the bombing until it gets broken in good.
