How hot is too hot??

Hello,

I have a question as to the proper operating temperature. I have read the posts about the fluctuating temp guages etc, and I have that problem.

Out here in Arizona as everyone knows it gets hot. Today I was driving the truck and noticed while I was in VERY Slow traffic, my temp guage went above 190 a bit. This concerned me quite a bit as I have never noticed the guage go above 190 before. What is the danger zone temperature wise that I need to be aware of etc?

the outside temperature today was about 90-95 degrees
Thanks,
Steve

Honestly I wouldnt be worried about the temp untill your about 210-230 degrees. A little over 190 isnt a concern at all. Mine will spike up to just over 190 when im pullin a steep grade when its hot out.. Since you have fluctuationg temp gauge go ahead and get the 180 degree cummins T-Stat. that solves that problem and will help your out in that extreme heat too... Good luck!

Mine runs between 190 and 200 but I'm not running a reguler T-stat though. I don't think you have anything to worry about at all.

Are you saying the thermostat can be had with a steady temp. The Cummins guys said I could have one that has a large fluctuation.
My guage moves from 180 to 140. it also has trouble refilling the radiator.
I replaced the stat, pump & cap, due to an overheating issue.
The herad is studded & o-ringed.
Thanks,
Wayne

Use the OEM Cummins T-stat it flows a lot better than most aftermarket ones. Both of mine come up to temp and stay there all day long unless under heavy load.

Wiping is normal and not an issue. It will stop before you ever get close to overheating.
