At what EGT temp do you guys back off the throttle? Going up some of those hills in Montana I was spiking up to 1200 with the camper loaded, even though it was pulling strong I still got spooked.

Just curious what the forum wisdom is on EGT temps. Thanks.

(oh btw, I'm pre-turbo).

 

With the probe pre turbo in my opinion 1200 is fine. You don't have too many mods on the engine I think you would really have to work it to hurt it. I have my probe after the turbo and have had it to 1200 more times than I like to admit to with no trouble. I have had a number of heads off medium duty diesels and big truck diesels I have owned and have not seen any piston damage. Aluminum melts at 1350 I believe so I always used that as a benchmark and tried to keep it under that.

 

I would say that 1300 or so is safe to tow at. I have towed at that, and had no problems.

I have mine set to backoff at 1250 and I have towed uphill for 20 miles at 1250 +/- 10 with no problems. My probe is before the turbo.
