How hot is too hot?
I have an 06 and my new gauges (trans, and EGT) read respectivly operating normally at tempratures of 170 degrees and between 400-600 degrees. I'm also running Smarty on 3. What might be a temprature to be considered hot (under load) and time to slow down or stop?
Thanks in advance!

Pulling heavy try not to go over 1300 for long periods of time. Just adjust the right foot upward a little. I just ordered a Smarty to help with EGT's. Hope it works out.

First, where is your probe located? Pre or post turbo.
If it's pre turbo.... keep them under 1400 and you'll be fine. Post turbo, about 1100 or less. I think post turbo reads about 300 or so less.

This is a subject that has been beat to death really. Some all say something different, I seem to agree to stay under 1400 just to be safe. My truck WOT I can barely get to 1400. Now sled pulling is a different subject. There are some guys that can peg a 2000 degree pyro for a couple seconds and don't ahve any long term damage but so many times doing it you will have trouble. I think on these common rails it is fairly safe to see 1600 degrees for short burst just don't make it a hobby. This is pre turbo i am talking about also.

Hey guys,
I have went well over 1800 a lot of times. I did have a valve seat come loose and I broke a valve. Now I don't know if the seat came loose due to the heat or would it of come close on it's own I don't know. I know it's a common problem with these 03s. I do know this, I have seen 1800 lots and lots of times and when I pulled the head off the engine there wasn't any heat related damage. I also know that I will let out before it gets to 1800 anymore.
See ya,

Wow...400-600! Must be post turbo.
I have run 1k straight at 1350-1400 pulling...
Not saying you should do it...but...you could. Normally bursts up to 1400-1500 for a few seconds and continuous under 1300 is fine.
Tranny temps under 200 are great.

I talked to one person who blew up his 06 CTD when his EGT hit 1450 degrees drag racing on the second run. Our engines may take 1400-1450 for very short periods of time but I'll stick with the old school thinking and not let it go over 1250 as I don't have a spare $15+K for another engine.

The Cummins pistons are much more durable than that.
Towing at 1450 degrees will over time soften the piston and engine failure will eventually occur....Not in two passes.

I've seen too many threads with this one ... we'll use my dad's mantra for machining .... "If the part goes flying out of the machine and dents the roof, back off 50 rpms"
