Homemade 6" Air intake, AKA the "whistler", tech write-up **Part 2**
Is that piece of tubing on the end going on to the filter the same as the original, just turned or is it a whole new piece? If its new, what is the part number?
Ok thanks. I've ordered all my parts, just waiting for them to come in the mail. I wish I woulda waited and read this post before I ordered, so I wouldn't have to order a new elbow. I ordered parts based on the old list. I'm gonna try to build my own box from some aluminum diamond plate I've got laying around in the shop

Did you replace the turbo elbow yet, or is it still factory? I ordered a longer piece of 5.5" aluminum tubing and am going to just run that all the way to the turbo elbow instead of using the factory silencer. So I was gona get a new turbo elbow too if you knew which one I would need
Guys, I ordered all of the components to make this whistler......This was a little more expensive than originally anticipated. I have got $180 in this thing already and still have to come up with some sort of heat shield and support mounting
. The AMSOIL Filter was $80 and I have $100 in the tubing, elbow, and band clamps. Granted I bought 12" of both the 5 1/2" tubing and 6" tubing in case I screwed up any welding, but it still would have been $160 for everything. It almost seems worth the extra $150 to buy a manufactured intake? Do any of you have plans for the heat shield that you have built? When I say plans I mean a drawing with dimensions so that I could reproduce what you have already created. If I can't get a heat shield figured out I may have a *****'s Whistler posted in the clasifieds. If anybody can send dimensioned sketches of their heat sheild I would apreciate it. The guy who made the box and put the Lexan lid over the filter had to have sunk a lot of time into that set-up. It looks great! But I am sure that isn't something that you can make for $20 and a couple of hours unless you are real good with sheetmetal. Thanks guys. Any help would be appreciated.

It was something like $68 from the Amsoil Website that was posted and then I guess shipping and tax on top of that. It was something like $78 and change for the final bill. I compared to K&N for the same thing was $10 less but didn't really want the oiled filter. AFE's Pro Guard 7 was slightly over $100. So I broke down and bought the Amsoil. I tried to find a better deal on the net somewhere, but got tired of wasting time and just bought it.
I just finished up a majority of the install on mine. I will get the AIT bung tig welded either tonight or tomorrow and drill a hole for the filter minder.
I made an aluminum shield for mine today. Took about 3 hours to measure and bend it up by hand on the bench. I don't know how much heat it will block, but it fits nicely. It has a 2" lip to mount to the battery tray and a 6" lip up front (can't really see it). The base is 11" with a bend to a 8" section by the alternator. I placed a slit in some vacuum hose and covered the edges.

Sorry to bring an old thread back but I built one of these this evening. It sounds wicked. Thanks guys for all the work yall have put in to it. I have read just about every post yall have put up. It took about 20 min for me to do. I finished it up and think I want a 45 for it to push it in to the corner a bit more. Does anyone have a part number for one?
