Home grown modifications

Most of us don't drag race, sled pull, or even compete in truck events so let's capture some of our favorite economical "Home Grown Modifications" utilized on our trucks to increase performance, fuel economy, or safety. I have seen and used some great ones on this forum.

There are a myriad of great aftermarket products out there and I am using several of them. Had I thought about the goal I wanted for just a few minutes I probably could have easily fabricated something myself for the simpler ones. Sometimes creating a modification for under $25 that will do just what we want rather than $300 for the 'ultimate' component is much more realistic and keeps the cash in our pockets for the tranny modification or new module we just can't live without. People can then contact the individuals for additional how to if needed.

A couple of my favorites are:

1) Additional cool air intake for stock air box.
- Acquire dryer vent and vent hose.
- Cut a 4 inch hole in the bottom of the stock air box.
- Remove the hood and flapper from the dryer vent flange plate and slide from the inside to outside of the air box the vent tube.
- Attach the flange of the vent tube to bottom of air box with screws or silicon adhesive.
- Attach flexible vent hose (aluminum semi-rigid or plastic) to vent tube and then zip tie to an area behind the bumper or headlights for a cool air intake.

2) High beams and low beams on during high beam operation.
- Acquire a relay (minimum rating 15 amps) and relay mounting bracket.
- Acquire 14 gauge wire and 18 gauge wire of appropriate lengths and necessary crimp and splice connectors for both wire sizes.
- Connect 18 gauge wire to trigger of relay and one wire to the +12 VDC wire of the high beam bulb.
- Connect 18 gauge wire to ground of relay and to vehicle ground.
- Connect 14 gauge wire to input of relay and battery.
- Connect 14 gauge wire to output of relay and to the right and left +12VDC wire of the low beam bulb.
