A VP44 24 Valve cam would be a cheap upgrade for a CR engine. Not as good as a Helix, but better than whats in there. Do you have one of those around?

The casting numbers can vary from the part number too. Check the heel or the nose for a part number thats different from year to year.

Nice research work on the Common rail cams, Cquestad.

I too have been thinking that an 03/04 cam would be a good swap in an 04.5 and up engine.
More performance, better fuel economy and the engine oil would not get black immediately as does on the 04.5's and up.

My thinking was that the "emissions/EGR" cam in the 04.5 and up was the reason for the fuel mileage difference
and causes the engine oil to get black so quick in these engines and not the 03 and 04 engines.

I guess this does confirm that the reason the engine oil gets black so quick on the 04.5 and up engines is because of the 3rd injection event?

Joe...

maybe combination of the 3rd injection event with the crappy exhaust duration?

GOOD tech guys, i have been wondering the same thing about a difference in the commonrail camshafts!

I have a question for those with 03 and up motors...especially the 04.5 and up. I am putting a helix 2 in my 07 regaurdless..

for those who have installed a cam in their 04.5+ CR...did anyone notice if the engine oil keeps its color more like the 03-04? Also does the exhaust note change much... does it get it closer the the pre common rail non-raspy sound and loose some drone???(that would be awesome) how much does the engine sound change?

I know ill find this out for myself...but im so busy at work it will be a few weeks before i can tear my truck apart and get this done. Im really looking forward to a more efficient mill.

Engine sound doesnt change on a diesel like a gas engine does. Or so i've read on a common rail. I've heard a 24v vp truck with a cam and it sounded the same as well.

No...it sounds smoother than an OEM Common Rail. Not even close to an old truck.

I would not know...I have twins...and a 5"...so it is just deep. My truck is very quiet at idle...

The 4.5 is the one that got cooked. The 04 in my sig is dandy...just missing one pump right now...but still on the road.

450 hp....wiping out two stock turbos over a 75k span pulling heavy trailers and hot rodding...the usual. HEAT!

I recently stuck in a HTB2 and Flux mileage injectors and bumped the hp to 530ish....and the temps were great...but the damage had allready been done.

I may have also had a manfacturing flaw...the block crank bore looked a little off since the wear was all over the place on the main and rod bearings/bushings.
