HELP...need numbers.

Got a quick question...

I need either the engine serial numbers from an 04 HO and a 04.5

or

Somebody with access to see if the part number is the same for all camshafts 03-current.

Thanks a ton...I will mail the tip or six pack.

Isn't the advertisement for the CR helix 2 that it uses "the grind for a mechanical injection pump" so as to assume that they are two different grinds? I must have misunderstood.

For the Dodge, there are different cams for the 12 Valve, the 24 Valve, the 03-04 CR and the 04.5 and up engine.

Christian, use the 03 cam rather than the 04.5 cam. Even if the 04.5 is the engine going together.

Oh yeah now that you put it that way...... doooyyy! I guess there would be a difference in one with 12 lobes and 24 lobes.

I looked the Dodge part number up for 3 different years and they all came up the same? I am not doubting your expertise, Don, but I wonder why they list it that way ?

I dont know why that is. Strange. I have noticed some of casting numbers would be the same on different year cams, but the grinds are different. Giving them a different part number.

Even the 12 valve Dodge engine has a different cam grind for the 180 (automatic trans) and the 215 (standard trans) engines. The 180 cam is the old 9040 cam used in many Cummins engines.

Well you were almost right..... they still have the same ammount of valve lobes. The 24v's (VP and CR) use a crosshead and actuate 2 valves from 1 pushrod.

Dang, I dont have my cam profile files here. I know the 12, the 24 and the CR are different profiles. I cant now say for certain if the 03-04 is different from the 04.5 and up or not.

I can recall from memory the CR cams stink for performance. The duration on the exhaust side is like 192 degrees. YUK!! It may be the cams were the same on both CR engines, but the negative effect of the 3rd injection event on the 04.5 and up was worse VS the 2 events on the 03-04.

So...in Summary...

I thought I had a good idea reverse engineeing the observations of cam owners that 04.5 and newer respond more in a favorable way to Helix 2's (or other cams for that matter)...I inncorrectly assumed that the OEM 03/04 cam was better than the OEM 04.5 and newer...

When really...all cams are the same...and the aftermarket cam helps more because of the lame 3rd injection event on the 04.5 and newer.

Just looked at another 05 cam...same number manufactured 9/19/03 and then found another 04.5 cam with a 4/12/04 manufacuter date...

LOL. They must churn out large batches of these cams at the sanme time and throw them in a pile and use whatever one they grab. Newer engine...older partr...older engine newer part...lol.

Darn...thought I was going to pick up a freebie mod on the bored out 05 short block going in my 04.5 to soften the 5k BLOW.

I should quit thinking so much...but hey...I do have an 03/04 OEM flexplate to replace the 04.5 flexplate for free why the engine is out.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT DON!
