Hearing a bad squeeling noise under mild acceleration, I think its the turbo
So, Like I said: When under mild acceleration there seems to be a high pitch squeal coming from the turbo. I purchased the truck almost 5 years ago and it would make a small tweeting (sounds funny to describe it like that) sound a little bit under hard pulling with my trailer hooked up. The noise had stayed pretty constant, but over the last year it started to sound like that Bird that was tweeting was on crack, which turned into the current squeal. Now it doesn't have to be loaded, just mild to WOT will cause the noise.
Question 1: ANY idea as to the noise? Maybe a leak somewhere (doesn't have to be a turbo noise, any ideas?)
***Yesterday I installed my new fully built transmission (135k, and it was done!), and figured I should start investigating my next cost.
I took the intake line off and wanted to see it the turbo. From only looking at the intake side: there was no rubbing on the veins, but there seemed to have a little wiggle, un-measurable, but it was there.
Question 2: Is this movement normal?
So I'm trying to figure out how to diagnose this noise, and trying to figure out if it is actually is the turbo.
Question3,...: What should I do for a turbo replacement, and can I upgrade the turbo? Would I notice any improvement with an otherwise stock truck?
Thank You,
Joe

Tighten all the turbo boost hose clamps, there are 8 of them. 7/16 deep socket works, may need extension with flex socket on inter cooler hoses. Then recheck if noise is still there.
First, what he said above... air leaks that are louder with more boost do what you describe.
On the turbo, a little up/down (within a couple thousandths) is normal (journals). Front to back movement should be none. (Thrust washer)
I don't see power adders (programmers, larger injectors) so just rebuild the stock turbo-- only if needed.
If you want a turbo upgrade, don't go very much bigger... you can't use it unless you are going to add power.
That is a different subject.

So tonight I borrowed a buddy's microphone app/device to see if I could maybe pin point the sound... if first left us scratching or heads, then he noticed an exhaust leak. The leak was between the block and manifold on the last cylinder.
I'm kind of thinking this may be the noise.
I'm wondering how hard or will be to change the gasket.
It's better than the turbo.
