Post Fuel Mileage Report

OK just finished a month long vacation accross the Great US of A.
Here is the final talley of fuel consumption:
Banks Level 2(No Speed Loader) 4397 miles 358.985 Gals of fuel @12.249mpg
Banks Level 3(No Speed Loader) 3710 miles 356.345 Gals of fuel @10.411mpg
Complete trip from Portland, OR via I-84 to I-80 to I-70 to I-57 to I-24 to I-40 to I-26 to US 321 to Columbia, SC.
Then the return trip I-26 to I-40 to Vegas to I-5 to Portland.
I had plenty of power, except when the wind was beating me up from the side at about 30knots.
The truck loves the Grape Vine and out pulls most other trucks as long as yo let the cruise control do it's thing. As far as needing an exhaust brake, for the most part you don't. The cruise will maitain 63 mph going downhill as long as it has a chance to run alittle in OD prior to haveing to go down the hill. In other words if yo just topped a big hill and it had down shifted and then starts down the 6% grade it will get up to about 75 then start to slow down. That's OK as long as there aren't any curves
Some of you may say that the mileage is bad but I think pulling a 10k 5vr at speed it's just great. If I were to slow down to 53-58 mph I could have picked up about 3mph
Maybe this will help some of you with the questions of fuel mileage

Love that CTD

Not too bad for a 10K trailer. I just got 17.11 on my last tank, mostly unloaded. But I'm still running the stock 245s and 4.10s , plus my truck just rolled over 3500 miles. The milage is slowly creeping up though.

Best round trip this weekend. Dallas-Austin-Dallas. 18.1 @ 75mph. I was very pleased. I was worried with the 20-25 head wind going down, but coming back, I guess made the a difference too. I was unloaded too. 19K on the truck. Needle read just a hair to the left of half when I parked her.

My overhead is consistantly wrong by 3 mpg. Hand calculated , I got 10.5 mpg towing my 9500 travel trailer, overhead said 13.5 after 300 miles.Empty it is doing the same real mileage is around 16 mpg average.I am not complaining,I think that mpg is good for what and how I pull (70 mph) would just like some accuracy. My last truck( 5.9 gasser) got 6-7 towing

I would say there is something wrong with either your truck or the way you are calculating mpg.

Are you resetting the overhead after each fillup?

How many times are you filling it after the first auto shut off?

do you have stock tires? If not, have you had the speedo recal'd?

Have you changed anything else (ie. added a box or other mods?)

If you are talking about me, I don't use the overhead, evrything is hand calculated and I do all the filling of the tank the exact same way.
Tires are stock and NO the speedo does not need recal'd. That I have checked several times on the road and with GPS. Its very very accurate.
Yes there is a box, the Banks Six Gun, however the Speed Loader was removed. Without the Banks the truck got about 1mpg less 2 years ago. I will say the fuel mileage is better with the Speed Loader

Right, .5 to 1 mpg difference is fine. 3 is not. Speed loader could cause that. The box takes the command from the ECM and modifies it before it reaches the injector (along with modifying the boost signal so the ECM thinks there is more boost than there really is and provides more fuel to match). So the ECM thought 70cubic mills of fuel went into cyl#1 for that cycle, but really 85 went in.

I know people don't believe the overhead, but it is pretty accurate with a stock truck. Fueling information directly from the ECM is compared to the odometer/speedometer.

If you call 2.2mpg optimistic "accurate".

Ever since I had my injectors flushed my mileage got worse. Before the flush I was getting 21 to 22 MPG running empty. After the flush I'm down to 18MPG, all hand calculated. What gives?

3 tank average
1st 33.1 gal/438.7 mi = 13.28 mpg
2nd 32.6 gal/435.7mi. = 13.36 mpg
3rd (today) 32.9 gal./439.1 mi. = 13.34

3000 miles as of today
This is freeway/city

My 01 5spd. 4x4 got 17-17.3
same route

Kinda disapointed
But the truck is quiet, and I have 4 doors that all open the same way.
And no gears to shift in town

Overall I like it
Just wishing for better milage
