Electrical Outlet For Cummins Diesel
Electrical Outlet For Cummins Diesel
Hey guys this is my first post so I'm sorry if this has been asked before.
I couldn't find any info about this. Many years ago I watched a truck show where they installed an electrical outlet to the bed truck. The outlet was strong enough to weld with. The kit also installed equipment to power the outlet. Has anyone seen this and is it still available? Where can I find it? Thanks

If im correct, your talking about a under bed "vanair sells them" Aircompressor/Generator/welder that hooks up the the PTO outlet on 4x4 vehicles...
www.vanair.com sells the applience, im not sure where to get the PTO

iker42,
Thanks for the reply. Your information is heading the right direction. I am more interested in the electrical outlet. I want to be able to use my truck as a generator on a job site. Thanks.

Sounds a little inefficient to run a 325 HP motor to generate some 110V??
I would suggest getting a generator to run as a generator.
I recently bought one of the Honda clone (Chinese, 4KW) units. $360.00 shipped, runs like a champ. Weighs right around 100 lbs. and will run for 12 hours on a tank full at half load!
There is a 270 some page thread over on the RV forum ( www.rv.net ).
Just a thought, seems to be kinda un-popular to idle these trucks for extended periods, for $360.00, I would sure consider one of these Champion brand units.
If you are in an area where there are "Checkers" auto parts places, you can pick up a 2000 watt model (came brand) for $199.00

PJ,
I hear ya!!!! With the amount of tools I am lugging around right now I am hesitant to add another. My thoughts are that it would be a temporary use, 99 % of the time I will have power, but in a pinch I would like the availability. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hey, let me hit you with another.
What about an inverter! What kind of tools are we talking here? Long run times?
Just wondering, there has to be easier/more sensible ways to get power.
My work truck has PTO driven Compressors, Hydraulics, and an electrical inverter.. When the PTO is engages it raises to RPM's to about 1800 so the truck is not Idling during the PTO operation.. It is cummins powered but it is a freightliner FL60.
If I am not mistaken when you hook up a PTO on the Dodge Cummins there is another control box that engages a throttle controller...
It is a waste of good diesel but it sure is nice to have that power available when you need it....!!!

Im with Gerry, its diesel, but if your working as a contractor(as i believe you are) then its paid for... And your not idleing, and if you are, then a stick cute to about 3 feet can fix that, or you can buy a PTO high idle box...going for about 65 dollars

Take a look at these. There's one more that I thought I had saved but I can't find it right now. It's a cross box with air and electric enough to run a small mig. http://www.vmac.ca/index.php http://www.ntea.com/im/wts_default.asp
Barry - the '05 in my sig has a 5KW inverter just for the power tools and equipment when line service isn't handy.
It'll run anything on my truck (including the welder), but I wouldn't want to run both the compressor AND plasma cutter for very long with it.
