12 volt Aux outlet not working
12 volt Aux outlet not working
This is NOT an emergency but I do need immediate help.

I have a 2002 1-ton Dodge Dually. The auxiliary 12volt power outlet (the outlet under the cigar lighter) has quit working. I have changed the fuse labeled “20 AMP Power Outlet” located in the fuse panel under the hood. I have checked all the other fuses with a 12-volt trouble light and they all check out ok.

What else could be wrong? Does anyone know how to remove this power outlet from the dash? I would like to get to the wiring at the back of the outlet to check further.

Thanks.

Tim
Are you SURE it's the OUTLET that has quit working - or is it possible that what you have PLUGGED INTO it has failed - can you actually check for 12 volts at the outlet to determine it has no voltage - will your appliance work in the "other" 12 volt outlet? Can't imagine what else could be wrong if the fuse is good...
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Re:12 volt Aux outlet not working
I agree with KJ6Q. Is it not possible to put a probe down the middle of the outlet and see if there is power there? BTW, don't forget to ground the other probe :P
Re:12 volt Aux outlet not working
Oh, yes. Did all that first.
Are you SURE it's the OUTLET that has quit working - or is it possible that what you have PLUGGED INTO it has failed - can you actually check for 12 volts at the outlet to determine it has no voltage - will your appliance work in the "other" 12 volt outlet? Re:12 volt Aux outlet not working
I guess I should have been more specific in my trouble shooting narration. Yes, I checked the 12 volt aux outlet with a probe. The light did not light. I checked the cigar lighter with a probe. The probe indicated power.

That is why I asked if anyone knows how to remove the outlet from the dash. I need to get to the back of the outlet to see if I am getting power to there.

Thanks

Tim
I agree with KJ6Q. TIM, let us know what you find, I use that outlet all the time myself, so might run into the same thing at some point...

Sure would like a good wiring schematic for these trucks - gonna have to buy a shop manual at some point...
Re:12 volt Aux outlet not working
I have to take the beast in for some routine maintenance in the next week or so. I will have them look at the outlet and get back to the group on what they found.

Thanks

Tim
TIM, let us know what you find, I use that outlet all the time myself, so might run into the same thing at some point...

Sure would like a good wiring schematic for these trucks - gonna have to buy a shop manual at some point...
I had to change mine out. I found it near impossible to remove as the service manual says. The socket slides into a plastic adaptor and locks in. Theoretically you push from the inside against the plastic through two holes. Mine would not move. I broke it out without damaging the dash and replaced it with one from a Dakota that I have here. If this is necessary you will have to replace the socket and the plastic adaptor with new. On mine the heat had melted the connector loose on the back of the socket. It is a very poor design and I might suggest an aftermarket socket that may be stronger. Mine is back together as stock but if I have further trouble I will go to a better design socket.

I finally had time to take the truck to the dealer. It was the outlet itself that had failed.

Thanks for all those that replied to my inquiry.

Tim
