Drop-in Turbo Upgrade for 2005
Drop-in Turbo Upgrade for 2005
I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500, 4x4, QC, Auto (Rebuilt Stage I), DPC Billet Triple Disc w/1700rpm stall speed, 4.10 gears, Smarty Jr, Banks Techni-Cooler system, SB Cold Air Intake, ATS Exhaust Manifold, MBRP Pro series exhaust, running 37x12.5-20.
The truck has about 230,000 mi, it is mostly a daily driver and occasionally pull a 10k camper (possibly making longer road trips this summer). It has stock injectors and fuel pump. I may be adding head studs, but I don't have plans for different injectors, fueling mods or custom tuning in the near future. I don't have any issues with EGTs and hoping they would further decrease with a new turbo.
Below are three turbos I was considering;
I have seen posts saying that just dropping in a Stealth 64 would give you an increase of 100hp with no additional mods, is that really true???
I was recommended the Stealth 64 over the STR saying the slower spool up time of the 64 over the STR would be made up by the Smarty Junior, again is this true?
Anyone have any person experience with the STR? Any idea what power this will add just by swapping the turbo alone?
Thanks in advance...

- Calibrated Power 3rd Gen Stealth STR

- Fleece Cheetah

Personally a slow spool sucks , and you need fuel to make up for real large turbo's
There is a test that the Cheetah is in , aurora 3000, HE351 , Industrial Injection 62SB, its called the turbo shootout
I actually chose the aurora 3000 for its dominance in the 1200-2200 rpm range (right where I drive)
You can download it here :

Calibrated also has this little article : about the he351, Stealth STR, Stealth 62
https://blog.duramaxtuner.com/blog/5...axPowerDeleted
If you actually read the first article you will notice that the bigger turbo's NEED bigger Injectors , or they just take forever to spool,
And Injectors are not cheap
I run a:
BULLYDOG PMT(set to extreme) aprox +75hp
50HP Injectors
ATS ARC flow manifold
Stainless Exhaust Manifold
and 5" stainless Exhaust
It works great for towing my 23ft Searay
And I have hauled a 30ft trailer over Inter 90 in Washington , and the North Cascade Highway
With plenty of pedal left to PASS slow cars !!
All I can say is hopefully someone will chime in to help you out some more, as I am not very familiar with the STR and Stealth 64, but they look promising, the only real way to tell which is better is with a dyno shootout on the same truck , that way all the other things are equal and the only thing changing is the turbo.
Good Luck to you
and just keep researching

I am in total agreement with you. Those senseless posts are ultra annoying and do absolutely nothing for this site. Just the opposite.
No help from the mods. In fact, as of late I am not sure if this site even has any mods.
Edit; We used to know who all the mods were, but with all the recent changes, no longer know who the mods are and how to contact them. Moderators, how about an update and tell us who you are and how to directly contact you.

My suggestion since you are looking for a Towing turbo is to add the Compressor Wheel, Turbine size and Housing size to your focus. Most Turbo's can be built / updated with parts already in stock. Just ask.
* Compressor Wheel: 62mm - 64mm
* Turbine: 64mm - 68mm
* Turbine Housing: 12cm/sq or 13cm/sq
I have a 2005 and I purchased a HighTech Turbo 63/68/14 SX-E Turbocharger and was speaking with the builder and they made mods to it and made it 63/68/12 which is what I basically wanted and works GREAT! Rolling Hard now! See my mods! I also have a built 2001.5 also used for towing with an HTT HTB2 SS Turbo 62/65/12. Hope this helps!
