turbo upgrade!? im lost

i am thinking about picking up the HTT turbo and arp head studs for sale in the classifieds here. I have been talking to the seller and was told this
According to HTT it is a 64/70/14 but it has a custom wheel that makes it spool like a 62/68.
My question is, will this turbo be a good single drop in for my truck in my sig. I plan on some flux 2 injectors, and to sell my smarty jr and upgrade to Smarty Revo. what do you guys think?

More than likely it is really a 64/71-14, even with a custom wheel it will not spool like a 62/68. That turbo flows quite abit and will be really laggy without injectors and good programming. IMO its not the best choice unless you will throw quite abit of fuel at it. Madhat had this turbo as a single (still does?) I know he can sum it up better being you have an auto.

Its hard to predict what a person expects out of a turbo. I have the 62/71 and I couldnt imagine trying to comfortably daily drive in the city with anything bigger. Your looking at blacking out intersections just to get ahead lol.

What are your goals powerwise? What other mods do you plan on? What are your main uses for your truck? Towing will play a big part in this decision.

i do not tow, i want a fun to drive-daily driver. i do go trail riding with the truck, and i drive pretty hard for daily driving. I dont plan to tow anything heavy with this truck. the most action it would see is a small trailer less than 5000lbs. id like to be around 550rwhp

That's going to be pretty laggy. I have a 64/71/16ss, and if you don't know how to drive it, you'll see some serious EGT's.

You could call HTT and ask them how much they would charge to upgrade it to a smaller compressor wheel, or what they would recommend. Just tell them what you are going to do with your truck.

I recommend doing the sticks and the turbo together.

If you are planning on 550hp I would go a little smaller, it will be more fun throughout the whole rpm range. Something along the lines of a 64/65 or 62/71. That with injectors you will have a quick truck thats a little easier to spool without blacking everything out.

Granted the 64/71 will work fine, its just a question as to how laggy can you handle. Its a little oversize.

thanks for the chime in madhat. i think i will give them a call and find that out. i plan on installing the turbo the same time i do the flux 2's i have been reading also that the flux 2's may not be big enough for this turbo. I think unless i could upgrade the compressor wheel cheaply to still keep the cost of the turbo under what i want, it may just be better to buy the turbo how i want it already...

preciate the info rip, i will check out the 64/65-14, i think i should prolly give htt a call and see what they say. I dont think i would enjoy a laggy turbo, the smaller one would probably be better for my needs.

You could also ask them about trading it in...

If it were me, I'd be looking at a S400 under a stocker. It is a great kit, and it'll give you room to grow. I have a buddy that made 700+ with that and some 90's. He probably could have broke 750 with some tuning. I know it's a little more than you want to spend, but do it right. I would be a lot happier with that setup...

I agree, since you have the bigger stock turbo on your 05 you could do that if your willing to spend the money.

I myself would have had to find a stock turbo off an 04.5-07 in order to do that setup so a single was a little better for me. I also thought about additional parts. An extra turbo involves a little extra care.

As for a single, I have been very happy with HTT turbos. For budget I would look for a 12cm or 14cm housing. The 13 and 16ss turbos get pricey. IMO you might as well go with a new turbo.

i dont really think twins is in my budget. it would be sweet though, maybe i could even reclaim some money back by selling the stocker if people want 05 stock turbos

For sure! There are many 03-04 owners just looking for the larger stock turbos. And many looking for one for a stocker/s400 setup. Even 2nd gen owners!

The good thing is most likely whatever turbo you do get would also be a good candidate in a twins setup if you DO decide to go for broke so you would be making an initial investment like I have done.

He tows for a living. I know he pulls equipment for a rental place 6 days a week. Truck is set up for towing.

That kit is just under 4 grand.

With what you are saying, you need to look at a custom turbo built for your application. I also think 2's are too big for what you want to do. Call the guys at HTT. Tell them what you want to do, they'll tell you what turbo to get. Then you can bring it back here and chew the fat about it...
