Dirvetrain noise?

Okay I got this weird noise while driving -- sounds almost like missing a shift on a manual -- a somewhat metalic gr-r-r-r-r kinda noise it is *obviously* during a shift, but it may be, and I haven't felt a power loss during the noise like if something was slipping. Is that a trans going out or....? I know this isn't much detail, but I don't know what else to add.

say goodbye to the tranny. Luvnacummins broke his input shaft. but he was running twins, and stacked chips. He had the golden tranny with over 40k miles and hauling heavy everyday plus his heavy foot.

Was planning on doing a full built trans anyway, but wanted to be sure that that noise is likely the trans before I scheduled a trans swap...
