So I add the extra qt. Kinda seems stupid to skimp out on the extra quart, especially since engine oil is probably one of the most important things to keep these motors running!!
You're the one that said he was wrong. He wasn't wrong his takes 12 just like mine and most others. Not all trucks are made the same.

More is better right Where does it say 13 qts? I've just never seen it in any of our truck manuals(all are 12 TEXAS size qts). Or are we just filling to the top of the XXXXXXXX marks on the dipstick and not allowing for expansion? Just curious...

Wrong Again, maybe you should read his original statement!

He is not saying anything about his truck, It makes a statement to all cummins motors in general.

TCR nope it sits in middle of the XXXXXXXX area. I'm not overfilling, I'm just making sure my motor has adequate oil in it to put in safe operating range!

I never said my manual says 13. I just know that when 3 gallon jugs are poured in. It is not in safe operating range!

I was replying to sloride's comment.

I don't know why you are so upset that myself and others use 13qts in an oil change. If the dipstick says to add another quart that is what i will do. I will sleep better knowing it is to the full line.

You said he was wrong. He wasn't. He was wrong about someone elses needing 13 just like yours but he's not wrong about his using 12 quarts like the manual says. Yours and evidently a few others are not the norm needing an extra quart.

This is the funniest thread I've read yet. Almost a week worth of replies among a gaggle of respondents bantering, arguing and talking past one another over a couple of owners with dipsticks that show the crankcase to be a qt low after dumping in 12 qts. I'm sorry - I know I'll be smacked down for finding this discussion - its length and intensity - humorous, but really, can't we all just get along?? LMAO!!

Well, both my owners manual and service manual state the correct fill quanity for the oil is 11 qts with out filter and 12 qts with filter. I am curious for those that are taking 13 qts a fill if the oil pan has a gasket leak? Both my 05 and my fathers 08 take 12 qts. on a level ground. Are you checking the level flat or at an angle?

I check my oil in my garage. I must have a 4" per foot slope in my floor that is making it take more oil. I am going to put 14 qts in next oil change to really stir up the pot.

TCR,
You crack me up!

What's even funnier to me is that everyone on this board has bought into the "every truck is different" thing. No folks....they come with different options! These things are built in a factory for crying out loud. Yes some may respond to programming differently, and have different options that cause different reactions in various situations.......but apples to apples they were all engineered the same.

Arguing over 12 or 13 quarts? Do yall really think one quart is going to make or break anything in a cummins? For what its worth, every oil change I've ever had (and I don't change my own) the guys at the oil change shops put 13 in, and that's the case in over a dozen shops here in TX.
