anyone make their own twins setup

Has anyone made their own twin turbo setup on here. i really wanna put them on my truck and was wondering if it would be worth it to do it myself? i can fab up pretty much anything but just need some guidance on how to do it?

Would my he351 be good enough for one of the turbos?

It can be worth it, yes... starts with self satisfaction on the job done and etc.
Plenty of people use the he351 as a secondary; no worries there. Just select your bottom turbo of choice (most popular is a s400 variant) and proceed.

Rip Rook at source automotive has many of the necessary parts for you. Call him and he will make sure you get the proper v-band clamps, sort out the details (there are many!) and what not. good luck!

Yep, Rip is a wealth of knowledge and can supply you with the parts needed for the job.

I made mine from scratch. I would have bought the pipes from Source Automotive but I wanted an external wastegate and I didn't want any silicone boots (all v-bands). If you don't care about the boots or if you want to use the internal wastegates I suggest using Rip's pipes. It makes things a lot easier to fab up. I like the external wastegate for ease of tuning but you can do as you wish.

I built my own using a few parts from Quad when he had some leftover twins parts. Im using a he351 over a BHT3B and a 40 mm gate. The thing that different about my setup is i used a 3rd gen manifold upside down and not the typical 2nd gener. It is kinda cool to say that you built something but when it was all said and done I didnt save near as much money as i thought I would.

Do you have pics you can post of your all v-band setup?

Also, with all the S300 top turbos being marketed with dual bigger volume wastegate volutes, is there any benefit to an external wastegate now (aside from more precise tuning I guess???)?

I'll get you some pictures later. With the external wastegate you adjust your boost with a turn of a regulator. If you do some reading on here you'll see many posts with people adjusting the rod on their top turbo trying to tune the setup.

If you look at oldsmokey's pics you see the pipe coming from the bottom turbo to the front of the top turbo is made from using 2 90deg elbows. Mine is the same way. After I did this I found a place that sells "pipe donuts" which look alot better, go figure.

Here is the the site. Here is a link to the "donuts"

They're reliable. With more parts you'll almost always have more maintaince and more places to leak but the fun is worth the extra risk/hassle. I was right at 500hp at 60psi. It can be as high as 90psi but the day of the dyno I had a major boost leak and couldn't get above 60 on the rollers. As thick as the smoke was I'd say mine should be around the 600 mark if the air would have been there. I have a Smarty, TST, injectors, dual pumps, clutch, studs ect. I hardly ever run above 60psi with just the Smarty but with the TST turned on it's not unusual to see close to 100 if the wastegate is set wrong. I just have studs but wouldn't rule out rings if I did more playing.

Ah... makes sense now! Do you still have the silicone boot for the secondary turbo outlet pipe to the intercooler?

Also, it looks like you moved your windshield washer reservoir to behind the passenger side battery? Or is that the OEM location on newer trucks?

Yes, I have silicone boots on the intercooler due to movement. The reservoir your talking about it for the radiator.

I liked the clean look of the v-bands and they won't blow off. However I can't find them now but someone makes silicone boots with v-band flanges attached to each end. They look really neat since they allow for flex but also won't blow off.

Caterpillar uses some steel v-band bellows on their twin turbo engines, but they're very pricey.
