Air intake mod, should I do this or what?

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=aid-300-928

It's only 54 bucks, and I really want to get some whistle out of my truck, but not tooo much .

Or should I find a way to hollow out my stock inlet somehow?

Going to mod the bottom of the airbox and add a dry Amsoil airfilter Ea189.

I've heard taking off the "silencer ring" isn't a good idea, any opinions on this.

Looks like a waste of money to me. You can take yours apart and cut the baffels out if you want and achieve the same thing.
I went with a used K&N cold air bought off here and then replaced the filter with an Amsoil (from a vendor on here) for not much more than you are looking at spending.
As to the siliencer ring I think thats a matter of preference. I left my silencer ring in just because if my turbo fails I dont want to give the dealer ammo to not warranty it. Removing the ring has no adverse effects though.
Mine whistles really well the way it is set up. I like it.

I hollowed out my tube. Took about 20min., start to finish. Then put a airaid drop in filter, and while I was at it, .....drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom section of the air box.

My truck whistles now.

I've got the MIT and Pro Dry filter. Made a big difference in throttle response, and slight difference in mpg. More turbo whistle for sure.
I went this way as to keep everything looking as stock as possible.
For my situation, a very good investment.

So I should gut the inside of the inlet but leave the vanes in place... I like this idea better than buying something .

i ran that airraid piece for 2 years, until i installed the twins. it went in quick, gave me the sound i wanted. but you could save your money and hack apart your stock baffle like the rest are saying.

It's more fun to build your own.

I put on a K&N System this weekend pulled my trailer the same 285 mile route to the race track as last week and lost .5 miles per gal. could this be because it eliminated the white deverter in the elbow just before the turbo?
It sounds good but not worth the cost I think K&N just screwed me out of $280.

When i stuck my K&N in my truck, i gained about 1.5mpg and my EGT were 300degs lower.
