I had the AEM for the better part of 35000 miles, and really liked the sound that came from the intake. However due to the fact that the filter doesnt flow enough air for me I went with the AFE stage 2.

Initial impressions:
Fit on the AFE is garbage, nothing lines up like it is supposed too, and the looks of black plastic just cant hold up too the polished aem tube.

Driving Impressions:
This is where the AFE shines. Turbo spool up is a might bit quicker then the AEM, and egt's dropped about 100 degrees.

Sound is gone though!!! The aem sounds much better than the afe!!! Especially 0-12 psi. After that the afe finally gets a whistle instead of the swoosh. The AEM definatly sounds better for those of you who want the singing turbo....and is about 3 times as loud. @40+ psi they sound the same, but that is attributed too the engine being much louder.

Do you have the silencer ring removed? If I just kick my high idle up I can here the turbo. It's almost too loud when cruising on the interstate. I've never had any experience with the AEM though. I have to agree with you on the fit. It was a pain to get the tube and the airbox holes to line up and the sensor holes.

 

Interesting. I would expect the AFE to be a little louder since it has a larger filter inlet size. Maybe the AEM is louder because it's metal?

The black plastic tube on the AFE is supposed to transfer less engine/exhaust heat to the intake air than a normal metal tube would. It definitely doesn't look as purty, but it's function over form in my book.

 

No silencer ring, i have a SPS62 which is louder than the stocker by about 1.5X, and my guess would be the aluminum tube resonating rather than absorbing the sound waves from the turbo!

Well the aluminum doesnt transfer any heat either....after driving the crap outta the truck i touched the aluminum tube, and shot it with a heat gun, 77*, basically the temp of ambient air....that day was 80*. AND it looks good....LOL

 

I know it's a little off subject, but have you run your Dr. Performance Predator by itself? I'm still battling over it or the EZ.

 

Is AFE dry?

 

Yeah i have, it is fairly strong up top....it does reach its 118hp claim on the dyno. The EZ is real hard down low compared too the predators top end. The predator is a progressive module....meaning it gradually increases pressure throughout the rpms really coming on at 1700....the ez hits you with all the pressure low, and fizzles out in the higher rpms!

The regular AFE and the PRO Guard 7 are oiled. The new Pro Dry S is dry. I'll probably switch to it or the PRO Guard 7 when this filter gets dirty.

 

I'd go with dry. JMHO.

 

I just switched over to the AFE Proguard 7 stage 2. It was a bit of a pain to get everything aligned. But I did get it alined. I like it much better than my AEM,BHAF,Scotty III and my S&B. By far the largest filter, other than the BHAF. I will wait until I can find the Pro Dry replacement filter. I had to put the silencer ring back in though. Way to much air noise for me. It is not as loud as the AEM because of the metal tube the AEM uses.

 

I have the ProDry and it is definitely louder than the PG7 filter. I can hear the turbo whirring at idle when the truck is in drive and hear the intake/turbo at any boost level. The ProDry is a huge filter as well.

 

Anyone have that replacement Pro Dry filter part number?

Thanks for the link. It looks like the replacement filter part number for an 06 Stage 2 is "21-90021". I can't find anyone who has them listed for sale. Anyone know where to get the replacement Pro Dry S filters?
