Added Smarty JR - now I have smoke on the trailer

Hello everyone - before I headed back to WI from FL, I purchased a Smarty JR. Desire / intention was to see if it helped with the MPG under towing conditions. The truck is pretty consistent at getting 10MPG when loaded (2 cars at 4500lbs and AL gooseneck at 5500lbs). The speed limit is typically 70mph therefore I typically run a "True-per garmin" 74 mph. Truck will get 11 to 11.5 mpg unloaded.
For the first 2/3rds of the trip I had the smarty JR set to SW2 (tow), TM2 and TQ4 and stacked with my quadzilla mileage max which adds 3 degrees of timing. I assume that stacking them would make the timing additive. For the last 1/3 rd of the trip i removed the Quadzilla mileage max - kept the smarty on the same levels.

I did not check / notice any smoke during the first 2/3rds of the trip but I did notice smoke on the last 1/3 of the trip. Under light acceleration or slight incline I could see black smoke out the tail pipe. When I got home, I do have some witness soot on the trailer. I have never seen this before when I just ran the quad mileage max or no mileage max.

Does the smoke tell me something other than maybe I had the smarty jr on the wrong setting? I would have expected a reduction in smoke from the smarty due to timing, mapping, etc. Maybe I should have put the JR on SW1.

Regarding the fuel mpg with the smarty JR under tow and with the quadzilla mileage box, I need to run the numbers to see if it made any difference. If it did not make a difference in either set up, I am questioning if the $495 was worth the money to be able to look at my codes as well as adjust my speedometer with the JR.

Thanks
Scott

I had enough smoke on my white rv to make me quit running the jr on tow. I now run it all the time on economy and have no smoke on my trailer. This setting towing a 12k unit 1100miles one way resulted in 0 smoke and still maintained more than adequate power to pull all grades.

Did you notice any mpg increase on economy versus stock / with out the smarty?

You say you have it stacked with your quad box. I looked and didn't see a download for a stack tune which would be " stack tune no added timing" Which is what you'd want. I'm not sure if MM has timing added but believe it does, if it does then as well as the Jr adding timing will create a lot more smoke as well as high soot in your oil. Might want to call Quad to verify this. If the MM does add timing then set Jr TM to stock too much timing can be a bad thing in a couple ways.
I tow my 5th wheel 10k ish on SW2 TM2 TQ3 and smoke is very minimal plus I installed a turn down tip on my exhaust and that made a hughe difference. Towing on this setting for me did help my towing mpgs by 1-2 mpgs.

Quad mileage max adds 3 degrees of timing, no other changes.

I thought the addition of timing reduced smoke. Thanks for your input

Yep, adding timing increases soot. I noticed this when the Smarty Revo timing is set to 2. Yet on 3 (less timing) it's pretty much smokeless.
