Question 2005 need help on mods

I purchased my first diesel a 2500 quad cab 6 speed 4x4 about a year and a half ago, I would like to do some minor improvements to the truck but do not want to void the warranty is there anything I can do or does it have to be stone cold stock? I would also like to know what the best programmer and air intake and filter to run on the truck just in case i deside to say heck with the warranty. I checked with the local exhaust shop and they said they would remove the muffler and converter for 90.00 would this help and would it sound a little louder I am partial to the louder earlier cummings. Thanks for the help.

Ok Cummins not cummings!!!

J'k!!! I would do the *****'s whistler and smarty!! The smarty is supposed to be undetectable so you would be ok for warranty unless you implode your motor!!! Lots of stuff to do just depends on what you want!!!

I too wanted minor improvement, but one minor improvement needed another minor improvement to make the previous minor imrovement make sense and work properly.LoL I didn't want to spend a ton of $ on the intake system, so I put in the Amsoil Nanofiber drop-in airfilter. If you want to have one of the best prgrammers, you probably want to do a Smarty. It's a little more money than the other's, but it's range of growth to other mods in the future is very nice. Somebody will definitely chime in on the Smarty, I think its in the SHOP DTR tab up top of the page. I took out my stock muff. and cat, but I wanted the sound somewhat mellow and not "poppy" (if that's the best word) so I had a 30" straight muffler put in place of the stock one, and also did a 4" to 6" MONGO looking tip. If you take out those 2 stock pieces in your exhaust, you should definitely notice your turbo spool up faster. Get some gauges if you are going to program or add a chip/box so that you can keep track of your running parameters and keep yourself from tearing something up.
I am not an expert, but have put several hours into reading alot of these posts, and the mods that I have done are based solely on how I am going to use the truck, and what end results I am after. Let us know how you use your truck or what goals you have for it. Just my .02 there is alot of good information on the forums, and alot of people will add their opinions here as well. Good luck
Scott

I use my truck about 25% for towing the rest is hauling lite loads, traveling, and etc. My main interest is opening up the truck to let it breath and improving on any parts to keep it running for a long time. I would not mind a little fuel mileage increase ethier. that and i would like to leave my dad setting in his 300 m every now and then. I would still like to know if deleting the muffler and convertor wil void the warranty, I have heard anything from a k&n air filter to a programmer will void warranty. One more thing what is a silencer ring?

cut the muffler out, replace with some 4" leave the cat. its against the law to remove it and you dont really gain alot other than drone. the smarty is nice but if your really worried about your warranty the safest thing is not to mod at all. even an afermarket cold air intake can cause problems at the right dealership! good luck and welcome to the board

If your concerned about voiding the warranty, don't do a thing to it. A dealer COULD void your warranty for just about anything you do. Could is the key word. Some dealers don't much care, others do.
Removing the cat and muffler really isn't going to give you much of a performance increase. It will probably give you a bit of a drone in the system that will annoy you when those times you do tow. Particularly the cat removal.
Installing an egt gauge at the minimum gauge wise, would be advisable. The '05's run a bit warm when towing.
I like my Smarty, runs better on certain versions of software then others.
Mines a daily driver and also tows a fair amount of time with a bunch of weight - camper and horses.

whatever you put on make sure you can take it back off easy, if you are worried about the warranty. like stated above I would leave the cat on. some dealers are really **** over little stuff that has nothing to do with the engine breaking.

I would still like to know what a silencer ring is I notice everyone has one that is missing in action. And thanks for the help I think I'll stay stock or just loose the muffler for now. Then after the warranty we'll see what happens.

its a round piece of thin metal thats held in my a snap ring into the inlet of the turbo. remove the tube from the air cleaner, gently remove the snap ring with plyers or something and take the ring out. replace the hose and have fun

I dont see any harm with the snap ring in place b/c thats just impossible for me to take out.
Ill post some vid clips later:

Iv also got an 05 but with the 4 spd auto.
The only changes Iv made to mine are added gauges(EGT & Boost) and changed the dropin filter to a Amsoil dry type dropin. Also lost the silencer ring and had an MBRP muffler installed.
When I had the muffler done, the installer also removed the cat for "test purpose". Fired it up with just the muffler and we deceided to put the cat back. Was too loud for my taste.
With the MBRP, it has just slightly more sound in the cab on the hiway but not nerve wracking.
Iv had the truck at the dealers several times and they havnt said anything about anything Iv done to it. YET.
