Truck is a 2008 4x4 6 sp 3500. It has 275000 miles on it. I just put turbo number 3 (OEM) in it since new (counting original) The clutch let go this morning, and about the only place in my area to work on it is the dealer. I have had good service from them on everything they have done over the years. When the last clutch was put in, they did tell me that the DMF was blued but no apparent cracks. At that time I chose to not change it. That was at 212000 miles. No hot rodding, some typical farm pulling.

I still owe about 8 grand on the truck. Would you fix it and trust keeping it or move it down the road? I realize that there is no way to replace it for the cost. I only gave 18500 for it when I bought it 4 years or so ago. The wear items on the front end are not considered. Absolutely no issues with the engine itself, no leaks, body and interior almost perfect.

Just curious, what are your thoughts...I will be talking to the shop in the morning.

Thanks for your inputs....

Call southbend clutch in southbend Indiana. Ask them for a decent clutch for your needs, then ask for their suggested installer in your area.

Best folks for your situation.

If your truck is all stock, I'd stay stock with your clutch- especially if it lasted 270k miles.

All Southbend sells are single mass flywheels- not the dual mass your Mercedes transmission was built for.

It will be louder, and that noise is the driveline harmonics not being absorbed (which is what a dual mass does that a single does not). In my case, a southbend setup only lasted 15k miles before I was paying to have the work done again because the clutch disc failed. I also got to pay for a transmission rebuild because it trashed my input shaft bearing too.

After lots of discussion and looking at the other truck in the drive, we decided to let it go. This would make 2 clutches and 2 turbos in the 3 or 4 years I owned it. I know it's not me. I've been raised around the Cummins packages. I think the P/O may have had an issue or two I didn't find out about. It will make somebody a wonderful truck, but i just couldn't throw more money into it. 2 x 4800 for the turbo and 2 x 1800 for the clutch, along with this, time the DMF, and from the engine bogging down when placed in Reverse, along with the tinkling/rattle/clank, just couldn't justify it in our current situation. Thanks guys..
