Cool What kind of damage will Gas do to a 6.7 diesel??

There is a '07 Ram 3500 I'm looking at for purchase which had its tank filled up with unleaded gas instead of diesel! I'm not sure the story about who/why, that's what I know. The truck was run this way, and the insurance company has "totaled" the truck because of it!

Assuming it was run till it quit, what all damage could/would be done? Is the motor really trashed as the dealer claims??

I guess it is not as easy as draining the tank and refilling with diesel to make things right....

If the tank was very low and filled up and run, it should have quit right away, or very close to that. The CP3, will take some gas flowing through it. The new style injectors might be ok. They are very expensive though. Up here, they are $1200 each and have to be programmed to the ECM at the dealer only.

worst case scenario... you'll buy and install a new pump and injectors... go shopping for the best price and do the work yourself. If you replace with same parts your ECM won't really know the difference. They tend to learn those minor differences in flows.

I have drained tank and flush out fuel system and engine ran without problems. Water in fuel system I think is worse, I recently replaced diesel engine because of water and rust in fuel system, $9600 for injectors.

6.7 injector codes will need to be programed into pcm, just make sure you write down code for each injector before installing and which # cylinder it went into.

So the injector gets ruined if gas runs through it?

Thats kind of hard to say. Id be more worried about the CP3 failure with the lack of lube from that much gas going through it.

Either way, Id proceed with caution. How much they asking for this truck?

Well that might work with the 5.9 but on the 6.7 the injectors must be programmed to the ECM, or if new nozzles installed each injector must be returned to is respective port.

Injectors are getting awful smart these days. Last weekend mine sent me an email and told me it was time to change the fuel filters.....

Not sure on price, it is being sold by an insurance company as a total loss (salvage title). Interestingly enough, the truck is being auctioned through one of the "drive-thru" lanes. So it is still being run.....I can only assume the tanked was drained and refilled with diesel?

The insurance adjuster wrote up the damage estimate at $21k
