Trouble with fuel pressure refief valve (long)

Just picked up my first diesel truck and I'm loving it but I'm having an issue with a p000f code. Fuel pressure relief vavle open. The truck has a lot of miles on it and looks like at one time had a edge stacked with the smarty. I still have the smarty but the edge is gone.
With he smarty on level 3 the truck feels great but when I floor it on the highway it doesn't really fall on it's face it's jus down on power.... And the p000f code is there.
Now I'm told that if the valve were to open the truck would stop dead in it's tracks? And I 'should' aslo get two other codes. One for high fuel pressure andthen one for low fuel pressure.
So is my sensor bad throwing a false code? Is there any way to tell 100% that the valve is opned?

Sorry for questions but since it's got so many miles on the dealer wants nothing to do with it unless I pay out the azz.
Thanks a lot guys

Welcome to the DTR.

What other mods do you have to the truck, deletes etc??? Fill out a sig so that we know what you have.

First thing I would do is reload the Smarty program and see if that fixes what may be a glitch.

The truck has a straight pipe on it that's about it. I jus talked to the dealer and I will be dropping it off tomarrow to have them install all the emssions stuff back on it. Even though I will prbly jus take it back off down the road.
I've tried different settings on the smarty and back to stock and no change. Smarty did jus release a new software the other day so I may try that as well.

I suppose that you have your original stock emmisions on hand and in good working order to be installed by your dealer? Will they be voiding your warantee and charging you this labor to return to stock? Let alone diagnose and fix the issue? Curious about all that.

I wish I could help you avoid this scenario. If it were me, I would put it all back to stock myself and then go in for potential "warantee" work. Maybe you don't care?

Guess I should of explained more, I bought the truck 5 days ago with NO dpf or cat. the engine light was on but I didnt care. Now that Ive been driving the truck I decided that it would be a good idea to have the dpf in case I ever had to sell the truck so the dealer agreed to replace all the emission componets for free because it was highly illeagal for them to sell it to me as it was.

The truck has a lot of miles so no more free work from the dealer! just want it back to stock then I can mod to my liking! I just hope they fix the fuel code becuase as soon as the code comes on it looses a lot of power!

If I had all the stock parts it would never see the dealer again! I will do any work I can myself, this is my first diesel so im learning as I go. But if I had to guess I think I need a new fuel sensor because im not getting anyother codes for fuel

I assume that the "dealer" you bought from was not Chrysler/Dodge then? Sounds like this dealer will be absorbing the cost to return it to stock?

If so, this is the best way to go so as to get it to stock and find out the on in the future if needed. Then as you say, you mod it as you like after it has all been corrected.

It was actually bought a dodge dealership. Don't want to say which one tho. Yes they are goin to eat the cost of taking it back to store.
I think they were jus going to try and pedal it off trying to play dumb.

Take it and make sure you have it documented so that they will warranty and emmisions "issues" that may crop up.

O I'm going to get it in writing for sure!! I jus hope my fuel issue gets resolved even if they won't fix it cuz it's not really related to emissions I might beagle to insight from the tech that is doing the work.

Thanks for explaining this all. At first, I felt really bad for ya, but it sounds like you should be in the drivers seat so to speak and get it all done/fixed. Wow, I'm amazed a Dodge dealership would do that really. I would think you'd have them by the nuts. Let us know how it works out, and congratulations are in order hopefully.

ok so while im waiting on the dealer I decided to upload the smarty ME software to see what codes would go away and WOW this thing was moving on SW3!! power was GREAT! BUT as soon as the code p000f came up it stopped making boost!! still drove fine but deff not making good boost.

Any Ideas what would cause just the p000f code? that is the one thing im kinda worried about and the dealer said that is a seperate issue and with out a warrenty they will NOT diagonse it.

thanks guys!

I suppose the question is if the relief valve is actually opening up or there is some electrical gremlin. Being that it seems to happen and occur when you're on it and pressure is highest, it seems that it would actually be opening up. Too much pressure seems to be the culprit and why this is may be due to injectors? Or the pump? Or maybe the relief valve itself?

Would not recommend bridging this "fuse" to see as you don't want to blow anything up.

Is there any way to know for sure if the valve is really opened?
When the code pops up it runs soft but does NOT fall on it's face like others are discribing.
I really think that it's the bad sensor giving a false reading. If it were opening I should get other codes for high and low fuel pressure, right?
