Out on the road with trani trouble....long.

First, a possible cause to the problem. I had to back down a really steep drive to load a 15 passenger bus. The loading spot was in a dip, the rear of my trailer was on the ground. I didn't even use my ramp's to load. When I tried to take off,,,I was stuck. I reved it up a couple of time's,,but knew better to do any more. They pulled me loose with a tractor. Then I tried to go up the hill, but I had too many car's, and too much weight to get myself moving. Again, I reved it up a couple of time's but knew better to try anything more. They pushed me from behind and got me rolling, then I made it with no problem's.

I went all the way from St. Louis to Florida with out any problem's. How ever, a few time's while letting it shift into 4th on it's own after going up a hill, it seemed to rev a few hundred more rpm's than normal. Probly slipping. But, it only did it a few time's. Now after dropping the load going down, and picking up a lighter load going home, I've went 100 mile's and now I'm having problem's.

I stopped at a toll booth, went to take off, and nothing but what seemed like slipping. The truck just would barely move while reving it really high to get going. I made it to the first place I could and checked the fluid. It's nice and pink, but does smell funny. I don't know that I would call it burnt or not. It shift's fine, and pull's fine once I get going. But when I try to take off, it just won't hardly pull itself. If I give it too much gas, it peg's the trani temp gauge. I've been going really slow to take off, and that seem's to be working for now.

I actually tried to flush the fluid. But, I can't get the darn line off. So I guess I'll say a prayer and try to make it home.

So what do you guy's think I messed up. I'm guessing the torque converter, but I'm no expert. Either that or the clutch's. But I think since it perform's fine except for taking off, it may not be the clutch's. What's your opion's.

BTW. No trani temp light, or check engine light. But I did pull a code 868. Anyone know what that one is.

If you see a red dually with a 3 car trailer on the side off the highway between Florida and St. Louis, stop. It may be me.

What is your route? Mont Eagle? If so, good luck.

Since it pulls OK once you get going, it doesn't sound like the forward clutch is toasted. Can't be the TC because that doesn't lock up until you get going. Try taking off in first gear (low) instead of Drive. If that clears it up, then the problem is the first gear sprag is blown.

Thank's for the replies.

I stopped for the night all ready. I have my 9 y/o nephew with me and didn't want to be out on the highway at night incase something went wrong. So,,,I'm STILL IN FLORIDA!!! But I do pass through Mont Eagle,,,if that's the one in Tenn. I got shut down there last tip because of fog. My path home is 75/24/57/64. So, if I need ya,,,I'll call ya. And don't go pulling your phone number cause you all ready posted it,,,,and I wrote it down. Thank's for the offer.

I think I may have put it in low, and that didn't make a differance. But honestly,,,I'm not 100% sure I did that. I know when I dropped the trailer to go fetch fluid, and got the weight off, it seemed much better. But I could still feel a little bit of slip. But it did not heat up and peg the trani gauge. Does that give you any idea's. You think it's safe to try and make it home. I hope so. Cause I have to.

Thank's again guy's.

A Google search shows that to be a low trans fluid line pressure code. That would fit in with the slipping trans.

low tranny pressure could be due to a clogged filter?. drop the the pan and check it out, it's worth a shot.

Is there anyway to adjust the line pressure. Even if it's just a temporary fix to get me home.

It's probably either a clogged filter or a bad pump. It's a bit hard to pull the pan and work on the valve body on the side of the road...

the only way you can increase the line pressure would be to tweak with the valve body, which you will need to drop the pan. I know it's hard to do on the side of the road, but i have done it. Good luck.

Don't pull the pan, though, unless you have a big catch pan or 7 quarts of new fluid with you. On the driver's side of the VB you will see a tin plate with two hex head screws going into it. The one that has a spring behind the plate is the line pressure adjustment. Unfortunately I can't remember which way you turn it to increase the pressure.... It's hard to get the hex wrench in that tight spot but if you pull the VB down you will need a bunch more fluid...

Well I'm down for the count. It did actually fixed itself for awhile. Thought I was going to make all the way home. It ran fine in every way. Then I made it 300 more mile's. Pulled into a Pilot, there was just a little hill, and a really narrow driveway, and it stopped right there. Had the whole place shut down for a hour. No one in or out. I kept asking for help, but no one would pull me out of the way. I told them all on the cb,,,Fine then. Good luck getting out. Finally someone wanted out bad enough they pulled me out of the way.

I unloaded the car's, dropped the trailer, and was able to make it to a motel. The trani is running hot and slipping. I'm basically screwed. Anyone know if I can get a DTT trani in Atlanta.

Should I even bother trying to change the filter. I can't even find a place to buy tool's. I do have 20 quart's of ATF+4. Or do you guy's think I'm done for. I'm really open for suggetion's. Thank's.
