Torque convertor lock out?

Torque convertor lock out?
I'm looking to put a compression brake on my 05, 3500 w/auto trans. Some of the manufactures refer to a torque convertor lockout and at least one other doesn't. I this necessary with this tranny? I know what a torque convertor is but what is the lockout? Any help greatly appreciated.
