Steering box play

How much play should there be in the steering box. All is tight from box to tires, but from steering wheel to box, I can move the steering wheel from 11 oclock to 1 oclock without moving the tires. This is both with the truck running and not. I can even grab the shaft from the steering wheel and move back and forth with my bare hand.
Is this even stering box issues?
I have some bump steering issues. Took it in to check the ball joints and they said were great, but needed alignemnt. That helped, but I still have to "Drive" more than I feel I have to. I have to focus to keep it between the lines and I find myself overcorrecting a lot. My 04.5 was tight and I have the same tires now that I had with the 04.5.
Is this something I can do in my driveway? Are there instructions somewhere to help? I have swapped a motor in my life, but I had 3 books and 4 articles to help. I need pictures. Will I have to get the alignemnt done again?
I have heard the 2010 box will fit on the 08. Is that correct?

I believe I am going to try this myself. The replacement from dodge is $547. I can get one from Orilles for $133 with a core exchange. SO I think Orilles is the way to go. Are there special tools needed for this?

I think there was a recent thread here about someone finding an issue with a joint (u-joint?) on a similar issue. When you move the steering wheel shaft by hand, are you sure that the input to the PS box is moving, or is the play before the box?

Mine is tight, no play what so ever. Id double check the linkage before dropping that much coin.

The u-joint going to the box was tight when I took it off. I checked that first, before moving on. The pitman arm was pita tight and I waited to remove it till I got the Box off the truck. Linkage was tight to me, but I may not know what I am looking for.

The steering is better, but it is still not perfect. It may be that frame flex I have heard about. I have one of the brackets on order.

The actual swap was not that bad. I took the hoses off away from the box because I did not have enough room to remove them on the box. My power steering feels better, less effort than before.

Over all I am happy with the results, but I am looking for more results to help with the road walk. So far I have ball joints, steering box, tires (toyo AT 285/70/17) and allignment done. What else could there be? Tirods?

I assume you checked upstream of the u-joint going to the box? Steering shafts can be a problem area. I think Borgeson was built upon Dodge steering shafts. Regarding the brace, I have only heard good things about this and it can only help. Not that expensive or difficult to implement.

The new steering box helped a bit, but it still feels like driving a lawn mower or gocart on pavement. I have not yet experienced the Death Wobble as of yet, but in all my reading, the road wonder preceeds the Death Wobble, like it is warning of worn parts.
So I bit the bullet and ordered the Borgeson Steering Shaft as well as the Upgraded 09 linkage built by Carli. I hope this works. I also have new bushings for the Track bar and new shocks (bilstens) and a new Steering Stabilizer on the way. Only thing left i know of to replace after this are the ball joints (which I have been told are still good under independent tireshop tolerances, not dodge) unless I start going with aftermarket Swaybar and track bar.
Any other ideas? This is becoming a money pit. If it would not be for the mega cab and Larime package I think I should have stayed with the 04.5. Well the 6.7, 6 speed auto and engine brake are very nice also.

I heard lots of good things about the steering box brace as well. It seems to be not that much $ and quick to install. Reviews seem to be marginal to a great help, with nothing negative.

Jtgco any opdated on your steering? I am still having some problems but the box is not the problem. I am just Looking for ideas. I have replaced the stearing linkage, track bar (bd adjustable), steering box ( red head), borgson steering shaft, shocks (bilstens), stearing stabilizer and new tires (toyo 285/70/17 opencountry at).

It is just so frustrating to have this monster made to tow tha has a hard time to stay in the road.

I have heard good reports from a couple of guys who put on a BD steering box stabilizer the link is to an article about them.

If anyone had heard about them I would like to hear from them. As I am thinking of trying one myself
