93 steering box shaft play

Hi all-just finished replacing center drag link and tie rod ends on wifes 2wd auto with 285,000 miles. The steering is still horrible, pulls a little to the right, (I know I need to get it aligned) but when I have her briefly turn the steering wheel left and right with motor off all the fittings are tight EXCEPT the shaft coming out of the steering box connecting to the pitman arm. The shaft moves left and right about an 1/8" at the box.

I have not ever messed with the steering gear box on either truck before, do I need to rplace the whole unit or is there any repair kits to rebuild and is it fairly easy? Does anyone have any schematics on this gear box?

Thanks as always!

It takes a few special tools and a good bit of patience. I'd buy a rebuilt or get one out of a junkyard. It's the same box on all the 1st gen Dodges, so it doesn't have to be out of a 230 or 350.

Doh! I don't need a spell-check, I need a math-check.

wannadiesel......

Oh by the way thanks Wannadeisel for the help on the fuel shutoff seloiniod.

I had to cut the friggin bracket off to get the wrench on it but gotter dun!!

I used the part VW # you supplied and the only 2 VW dealers here wanted 46.00 but didn't have in stock and I didn't want to wait 4 days!

Same part the dodge Dealer(s) wanted...get this sh__....201.00! []

Another local diesel injection shop wanted only a mere 89.00 for it.verymad

I ended up getting it from a small Shop....called Triplet Diesel Injection Service here in Austin for $55.00 Love to plug this establishment

Well her truck would start/shutoff but there was no power, bled the fuel filter while she cranked it and saw the mech fuel pump was working so figured A. the injector pump to a dump, or B. the filter was clogged.........

Pulled off the filter and saw clear water sitting on the top between the spin on threads and the rubber gasket. Odd that the water in fuel light never came on....so far our fingers are crossed that the new fuel filter seems to remedy this. I figure the injector pump will be the next big item!

I was going to send my box to PSC to be rebuilt soon. It has the same symptoms. Knock on wood it does not leak out the seal yet.
