Special oil for the 6.7 .....
Special oil for the 6.7 .....
Whats the deal on the oil requirement for the 6.7 cummins. Seems i read some where that you have to run some expensive dodge crap instead of the tried and true rotella and delo. Whats the deal?
From what I've found, the oil needs to have API CJ-4.
Shell Rotella T - Triple protection seems to cover
From the Shell website:-----
Shell Lubricants has introduced Shell ROTELLA®T with Triple Protection™ technology, a new and improved formulation designed to meet the new API CJ-4 service category for heavy-duty diesel engine oils. Shell ROTELLA®T with Triple Protection Technology™ provides significantly lower wear, exceptional deposit control and engine cleanliness for both pre-2007 engines and the latest performance and emissions systems technology found on new 2007 truck engines.

I picked up 3 gallon at Wally World for my 2007 Mega Cab 6.7. ie Cart before the horse.... Dealer mention the ship date was April 26, but shows in a holding area....

I talked to a service rep from the company that makes oil for our New Holland equipment. He said the new oil is a very low ash version that needs to be run because of the particle filter. He also said that you need to cut your oil change intervals in half with this oil. Would like to see some oil analysis to see what interval needs to be.

If you burn LSD and use CJ-4 oil then you should cut your OCI in half as the new oil was not made for use with LSD only ULSD. It has a lower TBN number then CI-4+ oil does and LSD will wear it out faster IIRC.
you can run this in the 07's

I used Delo and Napa gold filters every 3-4 thousand miles for ten years and 208,00 thousand on my 97 and it never used any oil between changes, even when I sold it. Unless I hear something negative about this combination I plan to do the same on the new truck. The new CJ-4 stuff naturally! Costco has always had a great price on case's of 6 gallons.
Im intending on using Rotella T 5w40 synthethic mix from here on out. HD oil is HD oil as long as it has the right rating then its good enough. Dodge and its constant attempts to bully customers into their specific brand if this or that is getting really really old. If they keep it up I'll consider a duramax next time
As long as its API CJ-4 compliant then you have nothing to worry about guys. I have some buddys that were getting upset from changing from old style oil they were using. ALL new diesels have to run this CJ-4 oil.......
