Remove Catalytic Converter From New Diesel?

I was chatting recently with the head of the service department at the dealership where I bought my new Dodge 3500 RAM truck (6.7 CTD engine). I happened to be inquiring about the latest computer re-flash (dated June 12th) when he mentioned that many of the folks (particularly local farmers) buying the new trucks are having the catalytic converters removed. He claims that there is no need for them on a diesel and that they only add unnecessary exhaust restriction. Supposedly, it's legal to do in certain states. The muffler shop won't do the actual removal (liability concerns ?) but if removed by the customer the shop will install a straight pipe in its place.

No, I'm not planning to do this in the near future but would like to hear comments from others on the forum about this practice.

if this is anything like the rest of the DPF removal threads it won't be here for long, so enjoy it while its here!! I've started reading up on a couple posts here about just this thing & for some reason they all seem to disappear??? well, not all of them, but a couple have? I'd like to see if the dang truck will actually run without the DPF, I know according to DC & alot of the dealers they just will not even function without it, but who knows??? if the sensors are replaced in the exhaust I don't see why it wouldn't run? but anyway, we'll see I guess??? It is against Federal law to remove it, leave it alone.
