I think my (new) used truck had the catalytic converter removed
Just bought a used 06 Cummins with 23,000 miles on it. Got it home, crawled underneath and noticed there is a muffler and what appears to be a resonator (short, round canister about twice as big as the exhaust with tapered ends) but NO Cat. There is an extra joint in the pipe between the turbo and the resonator----I assume that's where the Cat used to be. Now, the great part is I live in the only county in Idaho that requires emissions testing. Should the dealer be responsible for selling me a vehicle that had the Cat illegally removed? When I have the emissions test performed, I assume they will look for the Cat with their mirror, but how do they know if it should have one? After all, early 04's did NOT have a Cat and late 04's DID have a Cat. What am I up against here?
That resonator is most likely your cat, but its possible its been switched out to a normal resonator. I believe the cats look like them. That resonator ( if that's what it is) should fool most inspectors.
Sounds to me that you are looking at the cat. If it's before the muffler, it's probably it. The so called resonator is located by the rear axle. The cat looks like a spun metal piece. The resonator looks like a smaller muffler.

Well, if the pic is what you have, that's the cat, then the previous owner removed the muffler. ME's (muffler elimination) are very popular on our trucks. I removed mine and installed the ME pipe.
