'06 CTD Muffler & Catalytic converter. Remove it or no?

I just bought an '06 CTD 3500. The guys at work here are telling me to gut the catalytic converter and hack out the airbox because these diesels need better air flow.

Any opinions from the diesel guru's please?

Welcome to the board and good luck with your truck!

The moderators are going to lock or delete this thread as removing the CAT is a federal emissions violation and they don't want it talked about on this board.

Opinions vary...but most say that removing the CAT offers little or no performance gain, but it may help the truck run a little bit cooler.

There are tons of threads on modifying the stock air box or putting on an aftermarket intake.........just do a search and you can read for days. Good luck.

also, what about removing the muffler? Will I gain more airflow with that? How much louder can I expect it to be?

Don't mess with it. Not only is it illegal if you take it off, it's also (Don't quote me on this) I believe a 10,000 dollar fine if your caught, registration revolked, and you have to pay to fix it (if you ani't got your cat in the back yard another 1,000 to buy a new one from dodge). I got my kitty on and the mbrp exhaust, love the sound of it. Took the cat off to see what the dif. was, not much, it's more the "tone" of the truck that changes vrs. volume.

Leave it on there...

Just get a straight thru style 4'' muffler to take the place of the stocker. MBRP and Magnaflow are both excellent choices. Will give the truck a deeper rumble at idle without being LOUD. You will still hear it though if you get on it under and overpass though.
