P2000 at 60K

P2000 at 60K

I have a 2008 2500 6.7L and just got teh P2000 code. The truck has about 60K on it and Ive never had the CEL or P2000 code come on since I bought it 1.5 years ago. I am guessing its the O2 sensors but wanted to see what others thought or if others have had this issue at higher mileage. Ive read about the P2000 code when the trucks first came out but nothing as of late. Im fairly good with wrenching so Im hoping not to bring it into the dealer.

SUBJECT:
MIL Illumination Due to P2000, P2A00 and/or P2A01
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves verifying all TSB's related to high sooting issues have been properly
addressed, inspecting both Oxygen (O2) sensors and either cleaning the sensors or
replacing sensors, and installing an O2 Sensor Blanket/Shield on the exhaust pipe in the
area of the FRONT O2 sensor.
MODELS:
2007 - 2009 (DH/D1) Ram Truck 2500/3500
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 6.7L Cummins diesel engine
(sales code ETJ).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Customer may experience MIL illumination. Further investigation by the technician may
find one or more of the following DTC(s) present:
· P2000 - NOX Absorber Efficiency Below Threshold - Bank 1.
· P2A00 - O2 Sensor 1/1 Circuit Performance.
· P2A01 - O2 Sensor 1/2 Circuit Performance.
DIAGNOSIS:
If DTC's other than those listed above are present record them on the repair order and
repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin. O2 sensor fouling may be
related to other components that can cause increase sooting. Refer to information
provided in DealerCONNECT>TechCONNECT>Service Info>Group 28 DTC Based
Diagnostics>Module, Engine control (ECM), 6.7L>Diagnosis and Testing,
DealerCONNECT>TechCONNECT>Service Info>Group 29 Non-DTC
Diagnostics>Driveability — Diesel, 6.7L>Diagnosis and Testing, and/or Service Bulletins
related to sooting, turbocharger, and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), for the appropriate
repair information.

NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with an O2 sensor wrap, verify proper O2 sensor
wrap installation, (Fig. 1). If the O2 sensor wrap has been installed properly
and is not damaged, this bulletin will not address the symptom/condition.

1 - O2 SENSOR WRAP
· Verify software level in ECM and CCN to ensure that it is at the latest software level
available in DealerCONNECT. Refer to the appropriate Service Bulletins if the ECM
and/or CCN need to be flashed.
NOTE: New EVIC messages were made available with some CCN updates.
ECM (PCM) software commands when and what the CCN will display on
the EVIC regarding engine system and exhaust aftertreatment system
messages. The ECM and CCN software must be up to date (correct
software level) in order for the new EVIC messages to display as
designed.
· IF making a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and/or turbocharger repair(s) in
conjunction with this TSB, ensure EGR system, Turbo, Intake, Charge Air Cooler,
and other sensors are inspected for proper operation. Vehicles that have excess
soot build up should have the source of the soot build up diagnosed and repaired
prior to proceeding with this bulletin.
· Verify proper maintenance has been performed, including: fuel and air filter brand
(Mopar recommended) and condition.
· Check Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) system for restriction which may cause oil
infiltration into turbo and intake system.
If any of the DTC's listed in the SYMPTOM/CONDITION are present and the conditions

listed above have been met, perform the REPAIR PROCEDURE.
PARTS REQUIRED:

AR (2) 05149263AA Oxygen Sensors (Do not use earlier versions of O2
sensor when performing this repair. Ensure part
number is 05149263AA or higher level).
1 68064953AA Blanket/Shield, O2 Sensor
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove both upstream and downstream Oxygen (O2) sensors.
3. Inspect both O2 sensors to ensure that the latest sensors are installed in the vehicle.
O2 sensors that have p/n 05149263AA (or later) scribed on the sensor, (Fig. 2) are the
newer style sensor. If it is difficult to read the part number, the newer style sensor can
easily be identified by the soot shield design on the sensor, (Fig. 3).

4. If the oxygen sensor is not scribed with p/n 05149263AA or newer or if the soot shield
appears as the older style soot shield (as seen in (Fig. 3)), replace the oxygen sensors
with p/n 05149263AA. If the oxygen sensors are to be reused, clean the O2 sensor
using shop air only. Do not use any solvents or cleaners when cleaning the O2
sensor. Torque to 41 N•m (30 ft. lbs). Connect wiring to both of the Oxygen (O2)
sensors.
NOTE: The aluminized covering of the blanket/shield (p/n 68064953AA) should be
facing outward. In addition, the slit in blanket/shield is slightly offset to one
side. The smaller end of the blanket/shield should be placed between the
exhaust flange and the O2 sensor.
5. Slide the Blanket/Shield's (p/n 68064953AA) stainless steel band clamp (band # 1) out
of Flap A, (Fig. 4).

6. Wrap the Blanket/Shield's Flap A around the O2 sensor so that the O2 sensor fits into
the inner cutout of the blanket/shield. Then, slide the stainless steel band clamp back
into Flap A.
7. Place the blanket/shield onto the exhaust pipe so that the inner cutout is tight to the
O2 sensor and the outer cutout fits around the exhaust temperature sensor. Then,
wrap the blanket/shield tightly around the pipe. The blanket/shield flat end should
overlap the blanket/shield slit end and should be tight against the exhaust temperature
sensor opening. There should be no gaps around the O2 sensor when installed
correctly, (Fig. 5).

8. Secure the Blanket/Shield with the three stainless steel band clamps by sliding each
band into its corresponding ball lock cavity and pulling the band tightly. It may be
required to hold the ball lock stationary and pulling the band with pliers to provide
enough tension on the clamp to ensure that the blanket/shield remains secured. In
addition, the blanket should not be bunched up around the O2 sensor after tightening
the clamps as well. There should be no gaps around the sensor.

Verify the ECM has been updated to the latest flash. For 2007 Model Year trucks the ECM part number must end with the letters "AX" or later. For 2008 Model Year trucks the ECM part number must end with the letters "AO" or later. When performing the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures for this condition (reference TSB 18-013-08). Make certain to remove and thoroughly CLEAN BOTH OXYGEN SENSORS using a clean cloth and compressed air. Do not use any type of liquid cleaner to clean the oxygen sensor tips. Use compressed air to remove all soot from the oxygen sensor tip that is inside (under) the metal shield/cover. Blow compressed air into the center hole of the sensor shield to remove soot from the sensor tip. Ensure all soot has been removed from the sensor tip (inside the shield) and on the outside of the sensor tip shield.

I got a chance to work on it today and cleaned the O2 sensors with the method you described. I cleared the codes and put on about 100 miles today with no CEL repeat. I will have to see what happens over the next few days as well as verify the ECM update. I had the truck in at the dealer 6 mths ago to have all warranties and updates checked so I believe it is the latest but will have to double check.
