Mine came on at 3500 miles. Got my first oil change for free. It came on again just 1000 miles later. I'm ignoring the stupid thing and will follow the maintainance schedule.

Just took mines in this week. my light been coming on every 1000 miles. got 3000 plus miles right now. Service advisor told me that dodge is coming out with a software update in about four months. He told me that im babying the truck too much. The computer takes into considration a whole bunch of things including driving habits. they could even download the percentage of throttle that youre driving...ie 10% throttle 50% of the time and so forth. Maybe we just have to wait and see what they come out with.

It is based soley on mileage. 7500miles mine came on. I had already changed the oil when I purchased the truck at 500miles and then again at 5000miles. I will change mine every 5000 from here on out, one because I'm **** and two its easier to track. If it did take the orther various inputs into account, how is it that your oil analysis show more life to the oil?
The monitor is setup to watch for fuel oil dilution, not viscosity. The ecm has no idea what kind of oil you put in, so it would be hard to do it by viscosity. The reason your ocm came on at 7500 is because its an "or" algorithm. No message until fuel oil dilution calculation reaches the maximum OR you get 7500 miles since the last reset.

as far as oil analysis, why would they wait until the oil was "bad" before telling you to change it? Then you would be running the engine on bad oil for the time between receiving the message and when you actually change the oil. There has to be some "fudge" factor unless you are planning on pulling off the side of the road and changing it. Of course the oil should be "good" when you change it. You do understand that logic right?

What were your fuel dilution numbers for your oil analysis? I think the max allowable is 3.5%

Just wondering, if this is true why wouldn't the light come right back on for those that reset it without changing the oil and kept on driving. Mine came on at 1900 mi, i reset it, and I'm now a 2300 mi and it hasn't came back on.

My oil change indicator comes on consistently @ 7,500 miles with most of miles being highway driving. I ignore the indicator and keep a steady OCI of 10k miles. 110k miles on the clock.

Because the estimator, which is a complex calculation as mentioned above, takes into account other things like number of starts since last reset, avg duty cycle sincel last reset, etc. It will take awhile for those portions of the calculation to contribute enough to the final number to cause the light to go on.

I love the comments about how the synthetic oil "SHOULD" last longer than 2500miles, so I'll just keep running it. Your right it should last longer, hopefully it actually does. Seems like alot of risk for little reward.

Anyway, I think the OCM is pretty conservative too, but I wouldn't be guessing as to the lifespan of my oil.

oil chqanges

This all sounds weird. my oil change light came on at 500 miles dealer changed it, then it came on again at 1700 miles and the dealer changed it again. then at around 2200 miles it was back on. the dealer told me to reset it by turnig on the ignition switch and pushing on the pedal three times. It reset the oil change light. at 3100 miles it was on again. The dealer changes the oil All AT NO COST TO ME. So off I go and at 4200 hello oil change light. Again I was told to reset. And now at 6000 miles it is on again. Now this truck is a 2500 with the 6.7 of course. It has not pulled a traler yet and has only seen freeway miles. we went up to SAN FRANCISCO for the weekend this really sucks. Also my CEL HAS COME ON 8 SEPERATE TIMES. JUST WAITING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Is anyone recording their engine hours at oil change intervals ?

I changed the oil for the first time in my truck at 3,759 miles and 92 engine hours (40.85 avg mph).

The second oil change was at 7,953 miles and 196 cumulative hours (4,194 miles and 104 hours later) (41.11 avg mph).

My oil change required light did not come on before I changed the oil the 1st time; it did come on around 5,300 miles or so if memory serves me right. I simply reset it. At the 2nd oil change, the oil change required light did not come on, but I went through the motions and reset it anyway. At 10,700 miles or so, it's still off.

Any chance this is based somewhat on engine hours / avg mph / or a combination of these and other criteria ?

What are the codes for the CEL? If it's dpf related (or any egr component) it could be causing the problem.

As stated previously in this thread, its a combination of alot more than just those.

Got the message today.

It turned 7500mi and the light came on. I bought a lifetime oil change package when I bought the truck, so I had it changed at 3k then again at 6k. I guess the dealer did not reset the "oil change o-meter", or whatever. I will go reset it.
