Newbie Question

What is the payback on the CTD verses the Hemi? The 6.7 CTD price premium is about 6K and diesel costs about 30 cents a gallon more than gas around here. From what I have read, the hemi mpg is 14-17 verses 17-21 for the 5.9 CTD. I have not seen what the mpg numbers are for the 6.7 CTD. So maybe the question should be….is there a payback? I’m thinking of getting rid of my ¾ ton SUV and my old beater pickup.

The payback is if you have to tow, the gas engine just wont tow like the diesel. I personally will never ever own another gas engine pickup again. Also, I know that up here, the value of a used diesel is crazy, way more than the initial purchase difference. I paid 50400 for my truck brand new in 03, I have seen used 03's not in as good of shape as mine selling for 38k, thats only a depreciation of 12k over 4 years, a gas engine is going to lose way more than that. Hemi powered trucks are selling for around 20 - 25, so a drop of over 20k. So with the diesel 3k a year, gas 5+k per year.

I have a 2004 Hemi Durango, not really a truck.. Over the past two years it has averaged without fail, 14.6mpg. Thats all types of driving combined.

I don't think you'll get you money back buying the diesel with the differance in the mileage and price of fuel. But, I think you'll be more than happy with the 6.7 or 5.9.

Don't foget you get a longer warranty from the factory on the engine and resale is typically considerably better.

I run around town all the time getting 14.5 MPG (in my 04.5). May give you something to think about!!!! I can hook on to my 25 foot toy hauler pull it 1000 miles on flat highway and still see 14.4 MPG. There is a lot to be said for that, but it depends how much you tow, or if you just want a diesel!!!!

Like the others have pointed out you will pay a little more upfront but that all goes into your pocket when you sell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sell a 2500 Hemi with 100K miles on it. You won't get jack for it. Now sell a 2500 CTD with 100K miles on it. Ha, just broken in!

Currently in central California diesel is about .05 cheaper than UNL. Personally I will never own a truck with out the diesel. Besides the towing pluses normal driving like I-80 over Donner summit near Truckee/Lake Tahoe it was accelerating up-hill while gas trucks and cars kept slowing.
