Newb Question
I am looking to get a 2010 or 2011 Dodge Ram 2500 MEGA CAB with a Cummins. My primary reason for getting the 2500 is because of the MEGA CAB I do a lot of family driving (600 miles every other weekend) and want the extra room for the back seat. I will NOT be towing anything, so my question is should I still get the Cummins? I have read multiple places where the 6.7L Cummins "needs to be worked".
Does anyone know if this is true? I fell that if I am getting the 2500 I might as well go ahead and get the Cummins, but I dont want to get it if its going to have issues with just being a daily driver. I have seen several people talking about issues with Regen. Also when I checked ConsumerReports, when you look at the 2500 the engine reliability starting in 2007 is marked as worse case!! I am hoping that after having a few years on the 6.7L they will have ironed out these issues.
One last question, on the dodge website on comparing the 2009 2500 trucks, it says the powertrain warranty is only 3yr 36k miles. Is this correct? If its really 5yr 100 then I would definetly consider the truck, but 3yr 36k miles is a deal breaker for me. That right there seems to says this truck has a lot of issues...
I currently have a 03 Dodge Ram Hemi QC, best truck I ever owned, bought it new from the dealership, just need more room in the back seat! Would switch to the 1500 CC Hemi based on responses.
Thanks!

I can't speak to the question about current warranty so check with a dealer.
But in my situation I only pull a 21 foot jetboat with my 2500 diesel. Hardly a strain and have had no problems at all. These things are capable of pulling heavy loads and working hard. I have never heard of one having issues because it was used to lightly. In fact, light use might even make it last longer. And if you are taking twice a month drives of 600 miles, plus some daily driving, you should be fine.
I always had 1500 series trucks for boat pulling in the past and thought the 2500 might be overkill. Man was I wrong. I should have done this sooner.
I'm sure other guys will be putting in their 2 cents as well. Good luck with your decision.

Just how much backseat room do you need? I for one love my mega's rear room and would not dissuade anyone from getting one. However, if the new crew cab would fit the bill room wise I would be looking at a 1500 Crew Cab Hemi Laramie.
With my 06 1500 Hemi (QCSB) I made around 16 to 16.5 on the highway unloaded and wasnt exactly light on the throttle. If your not towing I dont see the need for a Cummins and if people hauling is the primary use I would look for a comfy and good riding a truck as I could afford.

If the new crew cab is a need, then just get the Cummins.
My old boss had a '05 QCSB 1500 he was just in love with, until he saw my '03 3500 QCSB. He heard the diesel rattle, and thinking he was going to beat me on mileage, asked me how my mileage was at various speeds. When I told him 13.5 MPG at 75, and around 16 MPG at 65 ..... his jaw dropped. He could hardly get double digits with his 1500, and he was driving like a little old lady.

Thanks for all the responses. I just saw that it looks like they will have a Hemi option for the 2010 (based on the spec sheets from Dodge's website). I will probably go with the 2500 MC Hemi.
Thanks for the info!

Not sure what kind of mileage the new Hemi's get with 4cyl mode. Hemi's in our 2500 work trucks get 11-12mpg tops and I don't think the newer 2500's get the 4cyl mode either, just 1/2 tons.
Unless the initial price is cost prohibitive, I'd go with diesel if you put on alot of highway miles. 2 friends with 08-09 diesels, claim18-19mpg highway and they don't work the trucks, no dpf issues.
Highway miles will keep the dpf in check, based on these guys trucks and mileage has to be significantly better than the gasser.
You'll get the extra $ back when you sell the truck and I don't believe they cost more to maintain...if you do it yourself.

If your truck gets 18 mpg then at $3 per gallon this = $0.22 per mile.
The difference is $0.03 per mile. At 100K miles you will only have saved $3K.
This is just a general comparison, but economics is a week case for diesel vs. gas unless the circumstances REALLY warant the need.
1500 CC (crew cab) hemi seems to make all the sense for the poster economically. Luckily, I'm not ruled 100% by such myself.
I drive my 08 6.7 to work and back every day, 6 miles door to door. Have only ever had one desoot issue that the dealer easily fixed. I tow occasionally which is why I got a 2500 CTD. I love my truck and it is my daily driver
